Broken Keys

Post by Jaysmithgroup »

Has anybody else had issues with breaking keys?

Since I've had the board (SV1-73), I've broken 4 keys from performing with it (once with 2 keys and now again with 2 different keys). I was told by my tech (who's been doing it for 30+ years) when he looked at the action inside that the keys are made of not very good plastic. He warned me that I'll probably keep having this issue.

Any thoughts?

Broken from the inside to the point that when you press them once, the key sticks. I've been a loyal Korg user for the last 15 years and I've never had an issue like this with any of their boards.

Yes. I had a key fall flat and it won't bounce back up. Its at a repair center now. I am hoping its an easy fix.

Just heard back from the repair center. I had two keys break near the hammers. They need to order new keys and replace them. Kind of a bummer. Been buying keyboards for many many years, and this almost never happens.

I've played my whole life and I've never broken keys like this. It's kind of ridiculous.

Its tough to tell. My repair center guy, who is authorized for Korg, Yamaha, and Fender reported to me that this is a well built instrument and that broken keys should not happen again, unless something gets dropped on the keybed or maybe it gets dropped during transport. Otherwise he felt it was a solid build. We shall see, but damn it is a slick piece of rhodes lushness. Glad to have it back. I am still pro korg sv-1.

Ooops - didn't see this post before I submitted mine...

I just "snapped" my middle E...

Where are you, where did you get it fixed and how much did it cost?

Thanks,
James.

I've broken 4

Never broken a key before, in 25 years of gigging. They break on the inside and then stick in the down position. They don't break completely -- I can flip the key back up. Getting really tired of it and hoping Korg does something to make it up to us.

fixing it myself

I'm not too handy but it was going to be $195 each time I broke a key (4 or 5 now -- ridiculous), so I had to learn how to do it myself. Got some fairly good instructions at Just Answer and moved a couple of offending keys to the high end (after some sweating and hollering), but now I have to move a black key, which seems a little different and isn't popping out like the white ones did. So anyway, it's not that hard, but give yourself a solid two hours the first time, so you can take breaks and calm down when you get frustrated. BTW, I didn't disconnect the white ribbon cable that connects the keys to the rest of the machine -- the cable is long enough that I just slid the keybed free and worked on it like that.
