Anyone from Germany who can help me please?

Hi guys,

For years now I've been working on my family tree and I've been doing very well but I can't trace back any further than my great great grand parents because they are from Germany.

In the UK, you can view births, marriages, deaths and census records online but I can't seem to find any data base available for the general public for Germany.

Does Germany have such a data base? And if not, how do you go about researching your family history?

Any help anyone can give me would me most appreciated.
