The legendary sandstorm topic

Post by Morshu »

I have attempted to replicate the sandstorm/feel the beat synth
and have done a decent job- but theres something thats making it incorrect, and i can't put my finger on what it is.

So i will post the patch here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/mhcsy4

tell me what you think- and how to improve it

Maybe we should have programming challenges to see who can get nearest to a certain sound.

Here's my attempt. I am pretty sure I've nailed the basic sound. The only thing I can't be sure about from the Youtube video is the effects.

I couldn't listen to the OP's attempt because I don't have an R3.

By the way, I just made this patch in less than 15 seconds.

1. Initialize Patch.
2. Apply hardclip waveshape, 100%
3. Turn LFO1 to 100 Hz
4. Patch LFO1 to Pitch, Roughly +15

Done.

Oh, you kinda needa add delay and shiznit as well, but I do that in post.

Wow you're fast . . it took me at least 30 :)

It would never have occurred to me to use your method, which certainly gets pretty close.

I got there in a completely different way. Init patch, switch both oscillators to square wave, turn on ring modulation, turn oscillator 2 semitones to 9. Add drive.

Possibly turn env 2 attack up a bit.. Not sure about that.

That's about it really

This video is full of failure. And adding delay added like, 6-8 seconds to my time.

But still, here's how it came out.

woah thats pretty spectacular how something so simple could be enriched so much by tiny effects... good job tpantano, you definately beat me- but i still really think the sound has a triangle and a saw... but it doesnt matter- you got it 100% right in the simplest way haha.

Since were on sandstorm right now, i will post the second part of this.

Feel the beat: (also by darude) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mN84To5ndw0

you might recognize this, as it was the song that was released soon after or before sandstorm, not sure which one. it uses the same sandstorm lead, but it has a new sound, that accompanies it far better- this ghostly epic pad sound that doesn't have that much of an attack on it. It sounds simple enough, but it really isn't.

i'll post my attempt as soon as i have a better attempt

The pad in the second clip sounds like a jp8000 supersaw.

In the second clip you can hear the lead better. I really think it was done with ring modulation.

a JP8000 supersaw is made by.... :D

Supposedly, you can't get any other synth to sound like a roland supersaw. Just sounds like a challenge to me.

I think there is some truth in that. You can get close, of sourse, but it won't really sound like a JP8000.

I'd be happy to supply the supersaws from my JP8000, and my attempt to get them on the Radias,

Should I start a new thread?

Yeah, sounds like an interesting discussion.

some clean samples of the JP8000 SuperSaw to listen to, see how close we can get on the Radias.
