I bought my unit a year ago (new), and I use a lot the buttons while controlling the Karma software from the M50. They are solid as day 1. I use the locate button normally while I record to the internal sequencer (I find myself recording more there than in software, except for audio).

My guess is that it must happen some kind of accident (like something that fell and hit that button) for them to break. Maybe in the shop, or a previous owner. Or you're being too hard on it
Maybe also, a bad assemble, in which case the button must have felt funny probably from the start.

As mentioned earlier on this topic, the freezing problem is not button related. Take a look to your serial number, and if it's too early, chances are it belongs to a bad batch which needs a capacitor to be replaced.
I dare to say that Korg would fix that even out of warranty.
I must add, a couple freezing situations reported here were related to a bad relationship with some sustain pedals.

All in all, really strange that this locate button thing happened to 2 units, and the same button. The kind of thing that makes people paranoid about it.

start stop button

Post by Tmax3367 »

So I'm not the only that has this issue. I got my m-50 back in July of 09. My start/stop button broke in Nov of 2010. And so far I have been getting by with a strip of electrical tape that pulls the button up and over the contact. But this has become less effective over time. I bought a foot pedal, but I guess I'm just not good with the timing on it and have consequently suffered some embarrassing moments on the gig.

I was hoping I could open the keyboard up myself and fix it,,but honestly, it looks a bit intimidating to pull everything out just to get to it.

And I too,, got the same responses. "Your too rough on the buttons", This is highly unusual". I wonder if I was being gentle with my Ensoniqs, Rolands and Yamahas. My Tritons still have their buttons too.

And my latest news,, the one Korg tech in Michigan is on sick leave indefinitely.

m50 buttons

Post by Tmax3367 »

I do gigs mostly on weekends, average about 4 weeks off a year. Though I do have a soft case for my M50,,it is ALWAYS on top of my other keyboards if for the simple fact that it's very light.

I have to give special attention to my M50 because it's my main keyboard as far as running sequences and the sounds I use in it.

I tend to believe that these kinds of incidents with the buttons breaking are very rare, yet it does happen, more often than Korg, or any musician would like.

The solution to this problem is becoming more of an issue as I am still using electrical tape to hold the button in place.

I miss ensoniq, but I do love my Korgs :-)

Push on the bottom of the M50 bottons

Post by John Hendry »

The M50 buttons are hinged at the top....push on the bottom and they will last a long time...fight the design and push on the top and IMO they will not last as long.

junky parts used by Korg

Post by SayerAve »

I paid $1,799 for my Korg M50-88 and one of the white key7s started making a "clacking" sound on the second day. The round black push buttons are so hard to press that today I pressed the "Enter" button just a little bit harder than usual and it snapped and dropped down inside the piano now I have no "enter" button, just and empty hole where it used to be, and no....I am not to blame for such crappy low quality junk they put in their expensive pianos! Notice that Korg USA doesn't even have a "parts list" page on their website???? WTF??? They make junky parts and don't even offer replacements???? I will never buy a Korg again. There is no reason why the push buttons should be so stiff. Korg is junk.
