Karma in Sequence Mode

Post by apex »

Can Karma be used to somehow jump to different sections of a song while remaining in time...

This is what I'm trying to do...

I'm wanting to program (either on my m3 or my Kronos) the ability to jump from section to section of a song while my church choir is singing.

I'll be on the organ playing the organ live, but I want to be able to pre-sequence all the backing tracks to make it sound full (our bass player went to college so now it's just me and drummer)

The problem is (not really a problem...), but the lady that directs the choir can't really flow in a preset routine (or she doesn't like to), so if I pre-sequence the song I never know how many times she's going to go through each section or how many times she'll have them repeat, the repeat sections. So I want to be able to program my m3 or Kronos to jump to different sections based on where she's trying to go. The songs will usually flow in a linear format so it's A-B-A-C-D-A etc... but you never know how long you will be in the B section. So I can program them in order, but I just need to be able to jump to the next "marker" (if you will) in the song. I think the Fantom G has this feature or something similar.... Kinda like you'd do in Ableton Live.

Thanks... and would it be ok for me to post this in the m3 section too? Just in case all their guys are not in the Kronos section yet?

I think the pads can be programmed to play sequences so possibly sections.

What about just using the Scenes?

You can also use RPPR and here you have a great tutorial:

Alternatively, you could use Set Lists and you put each section to each available slot, for example on slot for section A, one for section B, and so on... then I hope you can change the song on real time...

yeah, I thought about RPPR... I was just trying to figure out if it could be implemented using Karma....

I don't think you can use KARMA to control RPPR :( Reading the post on M3, I understand you'll actually be playing on a different organ so RPPR may be somewhat hard because you need to keep that note pressed... So I think you should also try the SET LIST with multiple songs, combined with a Foot pedal to switch each one (hope the order of the sections is not gonna change)

Apex,

An arranger workstation would work better in that situation. That would be the simplest.

It's not simple on KRONOS/M3, but there is a way you can use RPPR and KARMA to do what you need in this case.

If you are playing in realtime, and each section of the song is using a different KARMA GE or Scene, you can automate that with the sysex in RPPR and map them to the pads. I have a post about instructions how to do that.

If you are just playing back pre-recorded song, then you can slice the whole song into stereo samples by measures. Then get those measures into a drums kit program. Then use RPPR patterns to trigger those samples in a sequence like a drum look. Make a pattern for each section of the song. Then take those RPPRs and map them to the pads.

OR, you can use a workstation that has multi-timberal patterns, like Fantom-G, Motif, Kurzweil, or Emu..

MarPabl; You don't need the note pressed. RPPR has several options. You can have infinite loop as well, so that you press it will loop the pattern until you press that key again. Then you can set the sync option by beat or measure, or none.

The problem with the onboard keyobard is that you will loose the keys that are mapped to RPPR. It is best to use an external keyboard for triggering the RPPRs on a specific channel and track.

sorry shak... can't buy another keyboard right now... (I just purchased the Kronos) That sample thing... seems messy. LOL. And my stuff is not gonna be using Karma GEs (unless I find a way to buy that software...$170 seems steep though and then there's the fact that I can't use the Kronos software on the m3 and vice versa) The fantom G, just may be the best way... but then that means that I have to take the Fantom TOO and not just the m3 or Kronos.

Yeh, I understand.

Sometimes a section of a song will get repeated to fill the variable amount of time during the Church Money Collection process.

This requires a slightly different approach than performing on stage in a live gig where a song is performed pretty much the same time and time again.

In my church, we play everything live. (no sequenced performance)
Kronos-6, Krome, M3, Radias, KingKorg, microKorg, KP-2, KP-3, KO-1, KO-1 PRO, Karma, microX, monotron, monotribe, PadCONTROL, Wavedrum Mini, Volca Keys, Beats, Bass, Sample, monotron Duo & Delay, microArranger, M1, Wavestation, Volca Sample, Keys, Beats & Bass, MS-20

JD-XA, JD-Xi, Aira (system 1, TB3, TR8, MX-1), Prophet 12, Mopho X4, Jupiter-80, FA-06, D50, CS1x, CZ101, DX200, AN200, analogFOUR, MachineDrum, MonoMachine, Motif XF6, Virus Snow, Nord Lead 2X, OP-1, MFOS, Tenori-on, QY100, QY70, meeblip se, miniBrute, microBrute, Bass Station 2

yeah we do too (play everything live), but like I said, I'm the only keys player handling bass, fills, etc... and I want to make it sound more full.

Not during offering though... the actual choir/praise team songs.

That's true, I forgot  It's possible to use the 8 pads... hoping that will be enough. Do you have the thread where you assign the SysEX to trigger RPPR from KARMA?
