I'am in trouble

Post by flip »

I just got my PA3x. Set it up (after spending a lot of time reading the manual) and am now setting here havivg a beer and thinking I must be stupid. It can't be this difficult...or can it. Here are a a few things I need help on. Now I have a Yamaha PSR900 so I am not a newbie.

1. I set then KB to EASY PLAY thinking what the hell this must be how to play 101....

2. I can't get the styles to work like I am used to on the 900...I hit Sync Start.....hit a cord and nothing happens...the screen shows No Cord

3. I try to set the split point so I can get to the Finger Mode...ie 1 finger for Major, 2 7th etc. I hit the Split point button and nothing happens.

3. I put a USB stick into the slot and the KB recognized it. But, how do I access what's on it? I want to play the songs and differant styles (once I know how to get there). The 900 shows the USB 1 2 3 etc...I hit it and I have access to everything on it.

I am not a dummy...but after 3 hours on th KB today I deel like one. I have recorded 100's of songs.... WAv and MIDI and converted them to CD's.

Someone said that Yamaha is more user friendly....is that true.

Maybe tomorrow I will feel different. And I will read the Manual again tonight. I don't know why I did not notice this before but the KB does not have speakers....so I connected it to my Rpland KC60. I guess if you don't buy the expensive add on speakers the KB is dumb...no sound.

Well, thats my rant for now. I have 45 days to make a decision.

Hope there is help out there.

Hi Flip,

the following buttons are all on L/H side in between screen & sliders.
Press STYLE PLAY Button

Choose Style.
Make sure "MEMORY ' button is lit.

STS Mode Button is "Flashing" ( just try pressing 2 or 3 times.)

( under screen) Press Synchro " Start " Button , it flashes.

Press one of the intro buttons

On Style Screen there's a "TRACK SELECT" Button press once or twice so that screen you see shows Upper 1, 2 , 3 & Lower voices.

Down bottom of screen, there's some tabs. I usually play mty styles with
" Volume " Tab hilighted.

When you're ready, just play L/L chord, and it should start playing.

With the STS button flashing ( as per above), the RH instruments change when you change a variation ( like OTS on Yamaha) Also next to STS Button is AUTO FILL, it plays automatic fills like a yammie, if you turn it on.

PA's don't play styles directly from usb stick , you have to load them into a USER or Favourite Slot.

MEDIA BUTTON L/S Screen

Icon L H botton Screen ( default HD) change to either USB F or R depending where you stick is.

Press Load TAB

Find your Style ( if it's in some sort of a folder, like a .set folder or favourites folder, whatever, just hilight, and keep opening, whatever layer of folders exist , till you get to the individual style you want to load.

You can loaded sets of styles, banks of styles , individual styles, whatever, but just to get you started, try loading an individual style, till you figure it out.

Read the MEDIA SECTION of your manual, very important to learn to save, backup you data.

To Play a midifile use SONG PLAY
Top R/H screen is a drop down.
Locate your midifile via usb F or R
Press open, you can play an individual or Play All

Hopefully keep you going till Don gets a chance to get in touch.

Also there's a help button under the "Stand By ' Button.

Switch the PA3X on and work through the Quick Start guide in the manual - it is well worth it and will familiarise you in no time.

I really have to go a HUGE +1 to Pete's post here...at least open the quick guide section and go through EVERY part of it, with the manual open sitting on the PA3, with the PA3 actually turned on...

Don't guess, don't assume you know how it works and then make posts here, when even these basic steps have not been followed.

I laugh every time I see a post that says "I read the manual"...well it's pretty clear that perhaps the only thing "read" was the welcome page from Korg!!!

To fully "get" the PA series, an owner REALLY has to get totally immersed in it's operations, and you do that by pushing buttons, turning knobs touring through the various menu options and pages etc etc...you won't break anything and if really stuck simply re-boot it and start again...as long as you do not make major changes to the Global section, the Media section, or load REALLY dodgy 3rd party setups...you CANNOT go wrong by experimenting...

How do you think guys like Pete, or Sam, Rikki or any one of dozens of people learnt the stuff they know????

We all started at one point or another doing exactly this!!!

Now, go back and really READ the manual :)

No-one here will hesitate in helping out, provided any new user has done this. But we DO get tired of people having the keyboard for a couple of days and then saying it doesn't work, or my old keyboard was better, or whatever whatever!!!!

Do some work on your own first!!!!

Huge +1 also.

Plus, as suggested before, watch the tutorials here:
http://www.korgpa.com/en/support/tutorials.html

The (great!) PA800 movie applies for a lot of the functions in PA3X.

I'am in Trouble

You are all correct. Trust me I do read the manual. I have a Yamaha 900 and still read the manual....I never think I know it all. I always start at the basics and move up the learning curve. I now consider myself an "almost expert" on the 900. And I offer step by step to the "newbies" who ask basic how to ?'s on the PSR Tutorial Forum. I can't remember a post on that Forum saying in essance "read the manual dummy".

To those who have taken the time to read and answer my questions patiently....thanks, I appreciate it very much. I will continue to read the manual and work it out. So far I love the KB...it has great sounds and styles and I will eventually get it. Every step I step I get here I compare to the manual and most often the problem is me understanding what the manual is saying....the answers here clarify it for me. I print them, go to the KB and work it out.

Thanks, Flip ( sometimes a slow former Marine Jarhead)

Changing from Yamaha to Korg is a major step. They are very, very different.
Stepping up from S900 to Tyros 4 is definitely a lot easier then stepping up to PA3X.

I experienced the same, but the other way around, I had a Korg and changed to Yamaha (S910).
In the beginning I was quite frustrated and to be honest, I still am at times.

It's not that one brand is better than the other; they are just very different.
I enjoyed Korg's flexibility and styles. I enjoy the quality of sounds in the Yamaha.
And, now I'm getting used to the Yamaha, I'm beginning to like it better.

You tend to forget how much effort & frustration it took to get used to the instrument you had before.
You remember playing it like a breeze, fully in control...

Well, here is the end of the story. The PA3x is being returned to Musicians Buy and is being replaced by a Tyros 4. With the help of some of you guys, especially Don I finally figured it out. However, once I did the problem was even bigger, for me in any case. I have 100'and 100's of Yamaha Styles along with again 100's of MIDI KAR files. THe PA3 will not recognize anything buy KORG STYLES. It plays the MIDI files but the sound is not there. I have a lot of money invested and at 73 I don't want to start over.

Musicians Buy fully understood my delima and worked with me to come up with a "win win" for both me and them. I recommend them highly. The first transaction was handled by Bob and the second by Carl. For anyone looking for perhaps a "pristin" open box PA3X which will in their inventory by the end of the week the web site is: www.musiciansbuy.com.

Now my short review of the PA3X. If I was starting out, did not have so much invested in time and money, and I had a little more clock time (if you know what I mean) I would keep the KB It has fantastic Sounds and Styles truly a great KB Thanks to all who helped. Flip

I fully understand your reasoning & decision; Tyros 4 is also a great instrument and a major step-up from your S900!

Congratulations with your purchase, great fun & all the best! :D

Hi Flip,
congratulations on your T4 instead.
You really can't swap brands if you hope to use stuff designed for another brand of keyboard.

I invested 100's if not ,1,000's of dollars in Technics styles over a period of years. Unfortunately they stopped making the keyboards, so I had to move on to a different brand. Even though I've converted the odd one across to Korg, they don't sound the same.

You've made the right choice for yourself.

Thanks Rikki I appreciate your reply. I learned a good lesson...I usually rresearch thoroughly before I make a big decision. In this case I missed the easy one, are the KB's compatible? I got focused on what the PA3 could do and was impressed. Believe me if I could work around the KB differances I would go with the KORG. But, the T4 is a wonderful KB in itself and I am very familiar with its functions. So, end of the story....AND, I will read/re read the T4 Manual and will probably never finish it.

Regards and thanks to all who helped me. Flip
