to perform their song.
Lets say you have a band and would like to perform a song that someone else wrote / recorded.
I'm assuming if they recorded it through a record label you'd have to contact that company, right?
Has anyone had experience in doing this?
Do you pay a royalty to perform the song live?
Thanks in advance.

You can contact the copyright owner directly (yes you will have to pay them) or you can obtain licenses which will allow you to play any songs from that publisher. In the states that would be BMI, ASCAP or SESAC.
