New SV-1 73 Red Owner

Post by javaj »

Hello SV-1 brethren,
Just got my 73 Red with the original stand (silver and black, not the black only version), and the awesome rolling case for it. I love the combo and it should serve me well for church use.

Even my wife said wow when she saw it all setup. That alone is all I needed :)

Just from my local music store- Long and McQuade. I thought Korg made the 88-key case for it- but looking at a somewhat recent pricelist from them (2011), only saw my 73-key case. Good luck on your search- the Korg case seems to be the best option (plus has the Korg SV-1 emblazed on it so that is all good).

And yes, my wife is top notch (although I have to sell all my older gear- there is always a catch!)

Sell your old gear? What did you have to sell then? When I get my SV1, I'm gonna hook up my old piano to a KP3; then I've got the SV for authentic sounds and the old piano for loads of effects.

Never get rid of old gear, you'll regret it! Unless it's some little 20 dollar keyboard you bought as a twelve-year old. And even then you might wanna keep it; for nostalgia's sake.

Yup, I totally agree (usually). I always tell people they will regret it. But in this case, I have a Novation X-61 (purely for an integrated midi/audio controller- never use the onboard synth), a Korg R3 (fun synth, and the one that I would keep if all else sells), Roland RS-9 (sold it- but is a cheap 88key controller with older XV sounds and limited editing), and a Yamaha CP-30- cool, retro- but weights a ton and in my small studio space, takes up precious floorspace where I can have some chairs for visiting musicians). I felt like the SV-1 was the best replacement and was something I could fall in love with. The rest of my boards were not classic or unique enouigh (and could be replaced with AU sounds anyways).

Plus, I have always treated my music like a second rate hobby and never invested properly in the tools- going for something that would give me a big bang for the small buck :)

Too bad you had to lose 'em! On the other hand, if the SV1 is a proper replacement, well, you can be very happy with all the extra space you got now ;)

That's ironic; maybe it's because I'm still a student, but I purchased (well, made reservations for) the SV1 because I want to progress in making music. As said before, I'm gonna keep my old piano (which is a very decent Roland FP-2), but I feel like the SV1 is a proper investment, huge bang for a big buck, haha.

No no, I meant my other gear. The SV1 ain't a cheap board.
Way too funny!

It certainly isn't cheap. Got mine yesterday, a SV1 88, with reversed keys. However, up until now, I never had to use an amp, since all my digital pianos and keyboards had built-in speakers.

So you can imagine that when I turned on my SV1 and my Roland KC 60 amp, I was pretty shocked. It didn't nearly sound as wonderful as it did in the demo's (of course) or as in the music store (which was a bit surprising). Been 6 years since I got a new instrument, and it was a fairly simple one. I forgot for a moment that I have to learn to set the SV1 + Amp to my preferences, instead of getting a good sound immediately. And so the journey begins... Haha.

I'm afraid that the SV1 (acoustic piano, particularly) doesn't sound that great through a cheap amp -- you've got lousy bass response, and you've got mono. For a good thrill, listen through headphones, or over a nice sound system when you're playing with a band. Even my Roland KC-200 sounded pretty bad. I picked up a used Bose L1 system, which sounds much better than the Rolands, but still not as good as the headphones. Running in stereo through studio monitors can be quite nice, which is what I do while working at my computer workstation, and what most store demos I've seen have used. I'm looking into getting in-ear monitors for stage work, which I expect will actually give me a better sound than the Bose (and be considerably easier to lug in).

Fortunately, the Rhodes and Wurli sounds are a lot more forgiving, and sound great (to me anyway) over almost anything.

Haha, cheap amp... Goes to show that I'm quite a noob when it comes to amplifier and other performance-related stuff. Ah well, that means there's alot of new things to learn!

A friend of mine, who's been a sound technician for the last two years and did some pretty intense stuff (Rammstein concert, dance festivals and stuff) came yesterday to help me adjust the amp. Turned out that, when the thing was in my room, it was a bit more forgiving than when we put it in the living room. Pillow behind the amp, because it might prevent any possible resonance (Who knows, might work, and when I'm playing I ain't sleeping!), and the amp works perfect. And that's it: It's perfect at practicing volume. But I'm never gonna use it for performing; for that, I've got a wonderful decent old Yamaha RA-100. The rotary speakers don't function anymore, but that doesn't matter; the sound is amazing. Only problem is dragging it around... So that's my next goal; a transportable, good-quality performance amp. Or maybe for home use I'm gonna try to get a sound system indeed, or a stage monitor. I don't think the SV1 is something you wanna run through a characteristic amp, but instead you want to try and keep the sound as pure as possible.

And in addition to helping me adjust the amp, I also got a headphone and a jack-jack cable to also hook up my Roland FP-2 to the amp (didn't really think it was necessary, but it does help alot when comparing sounds and figuring which keyboard to use for which sound). Funny thing; I prefer the acoustic piano sounds *grand AND upright* of my Roland over the Korg. Could be because I'm used to it, I'm not sure... But I didn't buy the Korg for the acoustic pianos =P I'm completely satisfied with the Wah-effect, think it has a good potential. Very eager to learn how to use all the functions...

PA speakers often sound better than something sold as a "Keyboard Amp" if you need good sound and loud volume.

Check out the Yamaha DXR range, but they're not cheap, and don't forget you'll need 2 for stereo.

I have had numerous guitars and keyboards I've had to sell over the years because of personal issues. I've been through a Gibson Les Paul Black Beauty, a Jackson Charvel neck-thru axe, a Steinberger bass, a 1973 brown Fender Strat, a Korg DW8000 (remember those?), a Casio FZ-1 (remember those?), lots of mics, amps, other guitars and keyboards, oy! Life's a funny thing indeed.
