Newbie needs help programming

Post by billc »

Hi there -

I am a sax player that plays alot of secondary keys in a lot of bans so I finally bought a Krome 73.

I am trying to alter some of the already created sounds but am alittle confused on how

I want to have an "F Bank" of my sounds but most of them I want to use a pedal for differnet functions.

Ex - rotary for organ, wah for clav,

What is the best way to do this?

Thanks in advance. I went through the video and all, but it is marginal on how much it covers. I think I need some advice from real keyboard players that have been using this stuff for a while..:-D

Thanks in advance

Since you're talking about wah I'm assuming you mean expression pedal, not a switch pedal. First off, you'd need to set it to "cc#4 foot pedal" in the global/controllers page. Remember to save the global settings afterwards.

Next, in your program, assign cc#4 to whatever you like. In your rotary example, find the rotary effect settings in the IFX page and change the source for the speed selection to CC#4. Etc, etc.

+1 to Sander.

The section of the manual you're looking for will be addressed as an alternate modulation source or AMS.

Basically, some parameters have the option of being controlled by a variety of thing that might provide the necessary variable range needed. In addition to the "expression pedal" other controllers capable of assignment include note range, volume, aftertouch, the assignable foot-switch (jack in the back next to EXP), the under-used "assignable knobs" option and some 60 others.

Sometimes the AMS is a black & white on/off option and sometimes it's a range.

The EXP / foot pedal would provide a wider range control that would be useful for things like filter sweeps or (duh!) volume or degree of "wah" applied to a sound, but it can also be used to effect parameters like FX balance that would control how much reverb was applied, etc.

It's a good thing to look at in a bit more depth because it (AMS) can be used and applied in so many ways.

Awesome!
Thanks for the reponses.
I was trying to use it as I was a Nord with a foot switch and basic on off. Expression pedal would be way better.

Will pick one up today!

Thanks again and I will get back with my results. I am sure I will have more questions :-D

Before you rush out to the shop, be aware that there are a fair number of parameters where the on/off assignable foot-switch is indeed the better option -- things like turning leslie on/of on a rotary effect, things like adding distortion to guitar, and many others. So there are ways to use the Nord-style FS settings as a control for ASM if that's what you're used to.

The point is, that if you are used to controlling certain effects in a certain manner (i.e., FS on/off) there is no need to learn a new set of control gestures if they can all be programmed into your synth.

And the nice thing about Korg synths, generally, is that all of the data can be customized and overwritten as the owner desires... which by the way is also one of the most intimidating things for Korg newbies (even if you've been playing for a while). Be sure to back-up your data!!

Thaanks Bill good point.

I have a few pedals and am trying to decide what I like best.
I have a basic sustain pedal. - bulky piano type.
I have a quick lock pedal
and I picked up a basic M-Audio EXP pedal (not the best I can tell)

So I didnt have much luck with adding wah to the EXP pedal - did nothing so I made that a volume pedal. Its still a pretty crappy pedal. I have seen on the forum that these may not be the best choice in pedals and I need something where I can pick my cable.

I am using the quick-loc as a switch and have gotten it to work on a wurly w/ wah program by changing the source! OK Im on my way.

I tried taking an existing clav prog - copied it to the F bank and added a vox wah effect. Got it working but if I turn it on with the pedal everything gets louder and if I play anything bu soft it distorts.

Sorry for what are probably stupid questions to you guys. But I really do appreciate your expertise.

thanks!

You at least need to set the pedal to CC4 in global. Just checking since you said you set it to volume. Not sure which IFX you are using (hi-gain/wah?) but there's probably something in the chain causing the distortion. Many IFX have a "level" setting. Try using only the wah IFX and turn off any others for the simplest troubleshooting.

Can one of the four knobs on left be selected as an AMS for, say, OSC2 volume? If so, how is this done? Can the EXP pedal be selected for OSC2 volume only, but not OSC1?

If you set either one as an AMS source in that osc's AMP page, sure. On Korg hardware, always start looking for the parameter you want to affect (in this case OSC2 volume/amp level). There you will be able to assign which controller is to be used to control the parameter. Many people make the initial mistake of thinking they have to find the page for the knob, slider or pedal they want to use. There isn't one.

ok - so far this forum is full of very helpful and knowledgeable people :-D nice to see.

Here another one.

I set a foot switch to toggle rotary on/off Is there any way to have some type of visual that this is on off?

Playing live sometimes you need to rely on what you see ...well you know how the monitor guys go sometimes

I don't think there is one if you use the footswitch. You could use one of the switches near the joystick, SW1 and SW2. If you set it to "momentary" rather than "toggle" in the rotary settings, and set the switch itself to latch in that program's "controllers" page that would let you have the visual clue of having the light on or off. I think it should also be possible to, in turn, set the footswitch to control SW1 or SW2 in the global/controllers page. You would lose the footswitch as an entirely independent controller though, and I'm not sure if the latch/momentary thing would still work... Kinda like a lightbulb with two switches I guess. Worth a try, perhaps.

... yeah, but it requires a FS with an on/off indicator - there is none on the keyboard except for the SW-1/-2 lights. The BOSS FS series has LED indicator for latched mode, but its the only one I know of for sure.

And it needs a battery.

going to try assigning the foot pedal to sw2 - I can then customize from there and hopefully get an on/off light.
