Record audio into Cubase 7

Post by Synthee »

Hi everyone, Im new here.
I just bought a used Kronos 88,and Im really pleased with the instrument and the sounds.
But I cant understand how to record audio from Kronos into Cubase via the USB.
I have searched here and on internet but I cant find a solution.
When it comes to soundcards there are always a driver to install, so you then can choose that unit in Cubase.
But I understand that there are no ASIO drivers with Kronos, and no drivers att all for audio, only MIDI.
I can find Kronos in the "Sound" option on my PC and get the sound from the PC out to Kronos, but how do I get the sound from Kronos into Cubase?
Hope someone can explain that to me.

Hi

As for today, controllers for Windows do not have option of the sound card – therefore you can not achieve the recording via USB.
As far as I know, such option is available for MAC users though. So if you want to record audio to PC– it can only be done using additional, separate sound card.
I think many users of Windows have been impatiently waiting for new controllers from Korg – maybe we finally have them some day.

You need an external audiodevice with it's own ASIO drivers for this (like an audiocard or a firewire interface or an usb interface). The simplest method is to connect the Outputs of the Kronos to that device and create in the cubase connection window an audio input channel for the kronos.

A better solution is: to get full latency compensation, create a new external instrument in cubase and assign the two audio inputs of your external audiodevice as the inputs for that external instrument. Then load you newly created external instrument in a VST slot and from that moment on you have full latency compensation in your audio path and the Kronos will run rock solid together with your VST instruments in sync (just like it was a usb audio connection).

I'm using a Motu Firewire interface with lot's of extra ADAT interfaces connected to it in cubase 7. Since Windows can only support one ASIO interface you probably will have already an audio interface. (you can connect two ASIO interfaces on a PC with Asio4All, but the latency will be way to high to really use this as a professional solution).

You can actually record direct from the Kronos' USB output into Cubase using ASIO4ALL. You should be able to set the Kronos output in the ASIO4ALL control panel and use ASIO4ALL as your driver in Cubase.

I have used this method myself but I'm not near my gear at the moment so can't give detailed steps, pretty sure it was quite simple to setup though.

OK, thanks for your answers. Now I understand.
But I feel a little deceived by KORG because before i bought the Kronos i read this on KORG website;

"Kronos can also be used as an audio I/O for your computer, sending and receiving two channels of audio via USB. In a music production system using your Kronos and a computer, there is no need to purchase any additional hardware, creating the simplest possible set-up."

And my plan was to not have to use a separate soundcard box.
I tried ASIO4ALL now and it works, though latency is a little bit high.
But I also got my Scope Pulsar 2 with optical SPDIF in, and good ASIO drivers, so I think the best solution for me is to use SPDIF from Kronos into Pulsar2 and then route Kronos to Cubase via Scope ASIO.
So I think I will manage to get everything working fine, but Im dissapointed that KORG couldnt have done some ASIO drivers for such an excellent and expensive synth.
