Crackling / Clipping Issue

Post by SV1200 »

Hi All, Just bought a Korg Kronos. Had one last year but had to sell, glad to be back!

Anyhow, Ive been noticing a lot crackling/ clipping on random presets, and even on drum patterns. I'm NOT talking about the tape/analog effects. Its separate from that, that is actually somewhat pleasing. Anyone have a clue what this could be? I never noticed this with my 1st kronos. I also upgraded OS to 2.06.

make sure your audio level is not set too high....Not sure what your running the Kronos into but if the level is too high, the distortion would definitely crackle and pop....I would check that first....moon

Thanks, dont think thats the issue though. It happens in headphones and in main outs, even at volume level being at about 10/11 o'clock. I use the kronos as stand alone at moment. Not hooked up to anything.

Did you check if the level knobs on the back of the Kronos for the audio inputs are set to zero? If these are up they will cause noise.

If you can't figure it out, record a small snippet and post it online so we can hear what's going on....It may even be something like the RAM not seated correctly.....It would help to hear what your hearing though.....moon

Can you name a few specifically, and describe what you're playing on them? It's quite possible, for instance, for things to get quite loud internally and clip the D/A. In that case, you can eliminate clipping by reducing gain anywhere (including the Master Volume slider) *except* the Main Volume knob.

Thanks guys, I couldnt take it anymore and shipped it back. I checked the back early on, all gains where at 0. A lot of MOD7 sounds, if playing a chord, would pop, about 25% of the "drum track" loops would pop/crack (even if completely lowered internally). Also, a good 20% of the combis were giving me fits too. The drum track pops/click were consistent, same clicks. What was most confusing was the crackles from sounds (not drums) were inconsistent. I'd play a 3 finger chord on a pad, and random crackles/ pops would occur, even when the sound was fading away.

So weird, my first Kronos, I never noticed any of this.

You went out of your way to get a Kronos, a second time, came here to ask for help, and you just gave up within 24 hrs?

I'm sorry, but I'm not buying any of this.

Seriously dude? I bought something brand new for around $2k, most expensive thing Ive bought besides car/condo. If it isn't working correctly, why the hell would I just keep it and troubleshoot, pull my hair out, when I can just return and get a new replacement? What are you actually implying, that I keep a bum unit?

Did you inadvertently tweak the EQ settings (accessed from Set List Mode) on the control surface? I did this once when I thought I was in drawbar mode and it caused some severe distortion. It is a global function,  so if you did and then switched the faders to another mode, the EQ remains where you left it. So it would show up on a variety of patches.

To clarify- this ONLY happens in Set List Mode, so this may not be your problem.

Hi,

Please check every analog output using a phone. Try different programs (EXS preferably organ, piano, e.piano). If the clipping persist you need to call service.
This problem is occurred only about Kronos. Kronos X not have this problem.
Probably is caused by damage of mute transistor. The damage of device of mute circuit will be occurred by inserting plug under the condition of KRONOS that is turning ON.
Your dealer service need to replace the parts KLM 3005 Kronos with the KLM 3005 Kronos X. To fix the mute circuit is very heard. The candidates can be one transistor but we have 6 per line and 6 audio line.

Cheers,
Dan
