M50 electric guitar sounds... palm muting?
Bonjour!
Just playing with the electric guitar sounds on my M50 hoping to construct some epic prog. The guitar sounds (especially overdrive) are really impressive, but I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas or tips about getting an equally pimp sounding palm mute?? I'm talking nice and heavy....

Try constructing a custom combi.
Go to an empty User Combi slot. Use the "Copy From Combi" function from the dropdown and import, for instance, the overdrive guitar patch as voice 1. Make sure the boxes are checked to import all of the effects.
Import the same patch to be used as voice 2, but this time just select the voice directly from the within track and import without the effects. You can manually route this voice to the existing effects structure manually in the IFX setup page.
Define the keyboard zones so that you can work on the second voice independently. (And so the voices don't overlap) Then, tweak the sound so that the notes cut off as if they were palm-muted. Depending on where you define the keyboard zone, you might need to transpose up or down an octave to end up with a plausible sound.

As a further refinement you can have the two sounds do a velocity switch whereby the palm mute is the standard lo-velocity voice but the overdriven open sound comes in at higher velocities.
Or if you prefer the same switch could be set up using a button or joystick controller for more accurate switching.

Similar pre-set program exists on Triton (my board) but the issue with it is that it is a one flavor guitar, where you might want something more active or dynamically re-active to your playing style. And, IMO, that would take a Combi to really set up properly.
I'm generally not a booster of Motif, but it has one preset that I'd absolutely love to have on my Korgs -- Texas Boogie -- that, I think, does exactly what the OP wants.
It does a picked palm mute into a full on crunch ala 'La Grange' by ZZ-Top that is just a grin-inducing pleasure to play.
I'm almost at the point of buying a Motif rack just for that sound.

+1 The Texas Boogie voice on the Motif series is quite useful. As Bill has mentioned, this is a velocity-switched patch that segues from palm-mute to crunch/sustain as you climb the velocity range.
I've used it to play the guitar pattern when covering the Easybeats' "Friday On My Mind".
