WHat do you use your KP3 for?

Post by evolakim »

Hi everyone. I was just wondering what you guys use your KP3's for. I've been on this hard-ware kick lately for some unknown reason. I've been producing in Ableton Live w/ a plethora of MIDI controllers for years and recently added MAschine. Also, DJ'ing/performing live w/ Traktor, Ableton and controllers.

I recently bought a MicroKorg (which I absolutely LOVE!) and a KP3. While the KP3 is insanely fun to noodle around with, I can't really find much practical use for it. I guess the most useful thing I could think of for me would be to sample (and re-sample) the MikroKorg and Vocals w/ effects to make interesting samples to use in productions.

I've found that the MIDI sync is pretty crappy and that sucks because I would have loved to have gone all hard-ware. Maybe a MK, KP3, EMX-1SD. I almost bought the KoPro until I researched it a bit and found that it's basically useless.

ALL that said, what do yOU do w/ yours.

Thanks

Almost collecting dust here, well I use it for adding the effects to trance music composed on the microstation and sampling soundphrases from games and using the vocoder.
But actually I can just use more better effects with FL studio DAW.

I use my KP3 to improvise makeshift beats on the fly. I just got a second KP3, so that should help me not have to mute the main loop while making and manipulating more loops.
Things I use alongside KP3, as audio sources, include samplers, cheap keyboards, mic (I beatbox) and some vocal effects.
I find looping and resampling gives a different kind of work flow than sequencers.

I have used my KP3 when I played guitar as an active dynamic performance effect to add to my solos. When playing more the rhythm parts I usually stuck to an echo sound to fill out the space. For beats, this was a very useful tool. The real treat here is the sampling. I have created very deep sound scapes by sampling and resampling.

When I got the Kaosilator Pro, that's when the KP3 really became indispensable. It was not ironic that the Kaosilator Pro is in the same casing as the KP3 since these 2 boxes were really meant to be used together.

The most noticeable proof that these boxes were designed for one another is the midi connectivity. As it has been said many times, the KP3 midi is a bit off. However when working with the Kaossilator Pro the midi connection is it completely dead on as if both boxes became one single instrument. This is how I use my KP3 now...as part of the Kaossilator synth system.

I recently added a KP2 to the rig (for overdrive) and I am looking to round out everything with the Kaosspad Quad.

Hi SMK

- when you say you midi connect the KPro and KP3 - do you mean just to feed the KPro clock to KP3 ?

or is it the other way around -

you are using the KP3 as a Midi control to play the KPro synth?

midi- challenged here - sorry.

Actually you asked a very good question and thus pointed out something I forgot to put out in my instructions. Have the Kaossilator Pro be your clock to the KP3. It works with no problems. I think there is a slight issue with the KP3 clock that got fixed in the Kaossilator Pro hardware. I used to use the KP3 to control specific functions on the KPro that were not accessible any other way. Yes having external CC# controllers for the KPro really opens up the box more and you get access to performance tone and sound nuances you can't get with the KPro box alone. I wrote about this when i first got the box but no one cared. I had explicit instructions on how to use the KP3 really expand on your control on the KPro but it was a thread I started and no one really got.

The Short answers are, Kpro is your clock, and if you do some digging your KP3 can make the KPro even better. Either find my old thread from like 2 or 3 years back or do some exploring on your own.

Good Luck!

thanks SMK - for getting back and clarifying.

I think I stumbled across a reference to your using the KP3 as Arp control that set my ears twitching - will definitely follow that up.

Good info SMK, do you have the link for the original thread? I always hate on the KOP but if you've found a good way to channel it via MIDI then power to you!

My KP3 is used almost exclusively for the looper functions, as well as beat-match sampling a groove to free up my Electribes during pattern changes. Grain shifter is pretty cool too. It seems like a small job for such a capable device, but it's great for breaks and filling in what the rest of my rig couldn't otherwise.
