Easier way to change transmitting midi channel on the run?

Post by Wayne2005_10 »

I would love to be able to change the midi channel that my M50 sends info out on while I'm playing and between songs... I know how to do it in global mode and by setting up patch's (Program/combi's/songs), but would like to be able to assign a midi channel to maybe one of the controller knobs or chords triggers etc.
Or, can it be changed by an external source, (my second keyboard Kawai MP4 which has zones), by way of program change or Midi CC number, maybe using a event processor... Can this be done or am I dreaming..

Thanks, Wayne

You can change program in external synth using program change in sequensor.
And no, you can't switch midi-port using any buttons/knobs :(
You can change midi-channel in combi/seq mode and use pedal switch to change the combination to the next (I call it "Jordann Rudess-way").

Thanks for your reply,
Is the midi "port" you are talking about the same as midi channel transmitted on,?

I thought that there may be trouble assigning midi channel control to a button on M50... thanks for confirming that for me..

When i was talking about the external synth i was hoping it could possibly change the midi channel some way, in other words some sort of cc number or sysex number sent from my external synth (or other source) would be sent to the M50 and change the channel... could this be done??

Thanks

You could use a midi monitor like MIDI-OX and see if any sysex messages are transmitted when you change the global midi channel. If it does then setup your external controller to transmit that message.

mmm that sounds promising .... I was reading the parameter guide and I think I remember seeing a reference to a detailed "MIDI System Exclusive format information"..... the parameter guide suggested I contact my Korg dealer to get it. but your suggestion is even easier and probably more accurate...

While I was reading I came across the external setups/zones that are accessed in global mode page 1, do you think this could work... I could set each up with a different global midi channel enabling me to swap between patch's as I play..??

The global external setup defines what the knobs transmit when the control surface is in external mode. It doesn't do anything for what is received so I don't think that will help you.
