Getting Subscale to Work

Post by sridharar »

[Note: there was another post some what similar - yet different from this. So starting a new topic - Sri.]

I have tried all permutations of settings and still cannot get this to work.

I have created a Quarter Tone Preset needed for Indian Music.
My understanding is that if I selected this in GLOBAL and lock it -
then it will apply to any Style I use.
But this does not happen.

Also, I edit a STYLE so that it uses the Subscale Preset and write it into my favorites
When I recall I expected the Subscale to come into force.
This does not happen.

Furthermore, when I do backup sequence recording, with a selected style, I have no way to check and/or force the sub-scale I need.
But after exiting the recording mode, and automatically reverting to selected Style mode, when I check via Global, I see that Sub scale selection has been cleared. So my guess is that sub-scale selections are not being retained and there does not seem to be anyway to get the desired behavior for recording

It is also strange that while in Backup sequence recording mode - there is no way to invoke any other menus -- except EXIT.

if some or all of the above are indeed true, and not an operator error on my part, it is a serious design/implementation bug.

I am really hoping that I am doing something wrong and that someone is able to shed light and/or provide a workaround to get the desired behavior.

I think the answer is found in the user manual on page 23. ...

"Scale alteration made in this page is momentary and is not memorised. It is only meant to allow for fast scale alteration while playing.

To make realtime changes faster, you can also assign the Quarter Tone function to the footswitch or an Assignable Switch (see below “How to use the Quarter Tone function with a footswitch or Assignable Switch” for more information).

The use of SC Presets allows for immediate recall of previously programmed Quarter Tone scales (see below “How to use the Quarter Tone function with the SC Presets” for more information)"

It appears you can predefine 4 custom scales that can be called up in real time while playing. You can also 'LOCK' the current sub-scale so that it will remain in place as you switch STS and/or STYLES. You can also program the Assignable Switches or a Footswitch to select one of four predefined scales.

Thanks Rick for the investigation and pointing precisely to the item in the manual. I really wonder what drove them to make these design decisions- I do not know how it can be of help to anyone.

Anyways now I will do an experiment to find out the sub-scale (selected via global or STS) actually holds when I do a backing sequence recording.

I really hope that Korg Engineering is planning to fix soon these simple issues, irritants and delight the users/customers.

Sri Bhai,

I think they intended the feature to be a real-time performance function. I think there could be a very good argument that Sub-scale settings should be saved with Songbook entries at a minimum.
