Will Korg ever update the MS-20 GUI

Post by Gothboy »

Happy New year!

Upon installing and opening the MS-20 I was a bit shocked and surprised to learn that the GUI is a bit lacking. The regular full one is so small and hard to read that it's useless. Edit mode is way better but the slider is annoying. When you think about it....who would want a half window that you have to slide back and forth? This needs serious updating....will it ever happen?

Nobody knows. My guess - it won't happen.

I hope you're wrong about that.
It's such a great sounding virtual synth, why not bring the GUI up to the standard of its sound?
I'm also still hoping that maybe KORG will have something up the proverbial sleeve next NAMM in terms of expanding/improving the Legacy range, although... :(

I've never understood the concept behind making user interfaces so damn small. I swear you have 4 pixels to click on for some things! It is so difficult to work with many softsynths. Even the Kronos has many things that are just too small to accurately touch on reliably every time.

Well they do that to keep CPU usage down....however in this case it's just ridiculous and laughable. Maybe if we all appeal to Korg something could happen. It's not like we're asking for built in effects or something extravagent.

From what I understand changing the GUI to enable a larger format does not take up much programming time, so, I definitely hope that someone at KORG is paying attention. :)

The softsynths that come with Apple's Logic are wonderful in that they can be resized simply by dragging the lower right corner of the window. Works really great! When you are editing you make 'em big and access to the knobs and buttons is easy. Also it reduces eye strain in long work sessions.

It's not to keep CPU usage down. It's because they are using fixed size fonts and graphics that do not scale. As screen resolution increases the size of everything shrinks to the point that it become unusable.

It's not a simple change although there is no excuse for implementing it in that way in the first place. It can save on development time and costs but still that's not a good excuse.

AFAIK wasn't it also said that the VST standard interface doesn't support resizable GUIs?

Whilst it could be implemented for other formats it would depend on market share whether it is worth it (I might suspect AU at least may be considered a minority). And also whether such functionality would fit into whatever cross platform framework is in use.

To my knowledge VST supports resizable windows.
Maybe in conjunction with certain hosts the resize function does not work as it should.

You're wrong. Especially not true in MS-20 case as all graphics are bitmaps. Were the GUI done via vectors (example: Valhalla plugins), resizing would be much easier.

VST can have resizeable plugins, but implementation is different from host to host, so it's not an easy job to make the GUI comply to all hosts.
