Volca Bass - playing patterns or notes in DAW

Post by DaveKnights »

Hi all,

Really pleased to find this community after purchasing Beats and Bass for Christmas. I've been trying to master the Bass first in stand alone mode and feel pretty confident with the features so far (so refreshing to make music this way after only previously using virtual instruments).

My next step was to use the Bass in my DAW (Ableton 6). I'm happy enough recording as audio, and also playing back individual notes via the piano roll in a midi channel in Ableton.

The problem I am having is when I press play in Ableton it starts playing the selected pattern on the Volca in between individual notes I have drawn in the piano roll. Is there a way to make the Volca just play back the notes I have drawn (I thought maybe turning off the steps in the Bass sequencer could solve the issue)? Is there another way to solve the problem though?).

The other feature I havent found out is if patterns can be played back from the Korg Volca via midi notes drawn in Abletons midi channel piano roll. This would seem to me the only accurate way to record patterns in to the DAW and was something I am used to using d16's 303 virtual instrument Phosycon. Can this be done (what notes are used?).

Thanks in advance for any advice!

For the first issue, you can just clear the step sequence from the Volca (Func + key 16). The step sequencer will still start when you hit play in Live but there won't be any notes in the sequence.

I'm not sure I know what you mean when you say "record patterns in to the DAW". If you mean you want to send MIDI notes from the Volca to Live then that's not possible, the Volca's are MIDI in only.

Thanks for your reply.

Yes worked out clearing sequence will stop playback of patterns when playing individual notes through Ableton.

My second query is: can the 8 patterns stored as memory in Volca Bass be triggered via midi. For example via midi note in Ableton's piano roll?

The Volcas can receive MIDI notes, but can't send them.* This is why your DAW is not receiving notes from the Volca's sequencer.

*I haven't done this, but if you look around on the net, you'll find that some people are adding MIDI out to their Volcas by soldering three wires onto the main board. So what you want is possible, if you're willing to void your warranty and mess with the innards of your hardware.

OK thanks for your reply (I am new to midi!).

I think I will wait a while before doing any mods...

Hi we're you able to figure out how to select the VOLCA pattern via midi?
