How do you edit the STS sections?
First off...the PA3x manual sucks!! The worst I've seen yet! Now that I got that off my chest...How in the heck do you change the STS sounds on the PA3x to whatever sounds I prefer and please don't tell me to take off the factory protection because that is a given. When trying to edit them, it only gives me the option to switch it to any of the 4 sounds that already are there. Your response is appreciated.

See page 137 of the English User Manual. Under "Page Menu".DANDAN wrote:First off...the PA3x manual sucks!! The worst I've seen yet! By the way, I think the Korg manuals are just fine. Especially if you download the PDF versions so you can do searches on your computer. They tend to be 'encyclopedic' because of the sheer number of functions that have to be covered in the Korg arrangers. Simple keyboard = simple manual, complex keyboard = complex manual.

My approach to learning complex systems is to sit down and read the user manual cover to cover. Sometimes twice

Be sure you have all three manuals for the PA3X, the User Manual, Advanced Edit Manual and the V1.50 Upgrade Manual

How do you edit the STS sections?
Gee dandan I think that's harsh. None of the brand manuals are terrific but korgs is complex for a complex keyboard.
The info is there but korg systems work very different to anything else that I've had. To be honest, I don't see they could have improved it much.
Follow ricks advice and pay particular learning curve to the performance section of the manual. I read it probably 5 times to get it right.
I like the idea of writing notes to go back to. Makes sense(I'm short of that)

ANSWER TO MY QUESTION....
Ok for all you korg Manual lovers, the PA3x manual is the worst “I” have seen. The PA3x is wonderful! How’s that? Anyway, I have found the answer to my own question by watching a Video! Thank God for Videos! Let me now share this with anyone going through my same problem. These are the steps:
Question: Why do I want to do this? Answer: If I select a style and press one of the four STS1,2,3 or 4 buttons below the screen and do not like the sound the is already preset by the factory for that style or I want to create my own. Let’s begin.
Let’s choose the style called “Bigger Band” which should have four STS (single Touch Settings) on the bottom of the screen (first bottom tab) as follows: STS1 – Smooth Band, STS2- Piano, STS3- Trombone and STS4- Organ. I don’t know why Korg decided to put an Organ sound with a Big Band? So we are going to change that FOREVER. First press the STS4 button below the screen. Now press in the REAL TIME TRACKS area (right side of the keyboard) where you have LOWER, UPPER 3 UPPER 2 and UPPER 1. Choose the smaller button (sound select) right above the UPPER1 button and the LED light should turn on. Your screen will now show you all the sounds that the Korg PA3x has. Under the FACTORY tab on top, select the tab to the right the side that says “Wood-wind” and on Page 1 tab select the Real Clarinet DNC sound and press the “exit” button under the Value Wheel. This will bring you back to the STYLE PLAY screen showing now the upper right side UPPER1 as Real Clarinet DNC. Play it to make sure. Now we will need to press the MEDIA button on the right side of the screen under the GLOBAL button and press the bottom tab that indicates “Preferences”. This bring you to the Global Media Preferences page. On the Global Media Preferences page you will need to remove the black highlighted square that says “Factory Style and Pad Protect” ONLY because we will be overriding a factory setting. Then press the “exit” key. (Keep in mind that when we finish this whole process, don’t forget to go back to the preferences and put the check box back on to protect your factory setting again.) You should now be back at you STYLE PLAY screen which should still show the STS1 Thru STS4 settings. Press and hold the “Shift” button and press STS4 at the same time. You will now see the Write Single Touch Setting (STS) screen. Here you can change the name of the STS4 by press the letter “T” in the name field which will open up a keyboard allowing you to clear the present name “organ” and re-name it to “Clarinet” and press OK. You will now see the new name at the right of the letter “T” and now go below that to the field that says “STS” which will allow you to select the dropdown arrow showing you all 4 of your STS settings. Choose the one that says 04 Organ which is the one we are changing (you could have changed it the any of the four STS’s in the dropdown menu if you wanted to) and press OK and press Yes when asked “Are you sure”. You will now notice that the STS4 has now been changed to “Clarinet” and is no longer “Organ”. Test all four STS’s now! Mission accomplished! OH!! Don’t forget to go back to your Media and preferences page to select the “Factory Style and Pad Protect” square. That is it!! Now if you want to laugh, go to your manual and see if you can find anything remotely close to doing this!

Here's how I do it.
1. Turn off Factory Protect. (don't worry about turning it back on, a power cycle does that)
2. Select Style (Bigger Band)
3. Press STS 4 (Organ)
4. Keep pressing Sax and Woodwind Performance until you see Clarinet DNC
5. Select Clarinet DNC
6. Press drop down page menu and select "Write Single Touch Settings"
7. Make sure STS4 is selected and press OK then YES (Notice 'Clarinet DNC' name is automatically selected by the OS)
8. Press drop down menu and select "Write current style settings"
9. Select OK then YES
Done. Took all of 15 seconds max. And yes, I figured out how to do this from reading the 'terrible' manual.
By the way, an old acquaintance of mine, Bob Ralston played the organ with the Lawrence Welk big band for years and years. He also played with Ray Conniff and Billy Vaughn.

Hum?
Ok Thoraldus...you repeated what I said and made it shorter...much appreciated...to your big band friends that played the organ with the band...I hope they enjoyed it and send my regards...I've never heard of that but keep in mind...whatever floats your boat (hope this doesn't sound nasty)...as far as the manual coment...I was expecting someone else to respond to that being that you're already bias and comented earlier.
Where were you when I needed you?
Cheers!

Dandan, I understand the frustration, but I think changing the default STS sounds is the wrong way to do what you want to achieve. Because the same style may be used in many different songs, each requiring their own specific STS settings and tempo, you should leave the defaults and create a SONGBOOK entry instead. You can then set up the perfect STS's for each song. Easy to do and once you then setup your own lists of songs which might be your favourites or for different gigs or genres or as many ways you want. Saves scrolling through a 1000 titles to get the right one.
With SONGBOOK, your style, tempo, STSs, selected intro and volumes for each voice channel are saved and recalled. Much better way than altering default settings in my view.
Try it out...

Thanks for the info Pfeff. It's funny because that is exactly what I was discussing with a friend yesterday that would eventually be doing. I was reviewing the process yesterday and you are absolutely right although that Organ had to go for me in the STS!
Eventually I will get to that but obiously it will take time because you want to be able to make sure you create it with all the toppings. Thanks for your input. Stay Blessed!

My pleasure Dandan.
By the way, with Songbook, the entries don't need to be songs. You can always create them with the root Style Names and save them as a Genre of the style group and then add them to a list called Styles. Many ways to skin that cat.

Would have been great if Korg provided that by default as a *special* Custom list (I mean that all the styles in the keyboard automatically get an entry in that custom list).Pfeff wrote:My pleasure Dandan.

So that all your styles were searchable on many different ways (tempo, key, genre etcetera).
It takes a lot of time to establish this manually; the OS should be able to do that in a background procedure.
Would be great to have that facility IMO.

You guys are great. Many thanks for the tips. I must admit that I too get really frustrated with the manual. But with great help like yours plus this excellent forum it makes life a little easier. Cheers, and please keep up the great work. For whatever its worth, I do promise to read the manual again.
