MicroKorg XL+ sounds on XL

Has anyone successfully transferred the sounds of the XL+ onto the XL?

Hi,

Yep, I had.
I did something similar as the program of VladiKuz (see http://www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/ ... hp?t=87208) way before he released his program.
I downloaded the XL+ editor and took the file holding the factory presets of the XL+ and pushed them through my script (or you can use VladiKuz' program). This way you end up with a library file which can be read by the XL editor and thus downloaded to the XL.

Note, parameters on the XL+ match nicely one on one on those of the XL. We assume that both boards have exactly or almost exactly the same engine and thus the converted XL+ patches should sound exactly the same on the XL. (I could not compare them by ear...) However there is at least one type of patches that will sound different. It are those patches which make use of PCM samples. The set of samples between XL and XL+ are different.

Thanks much for the reply OpAmp. But how do you get the files/patches from the XL+ to be converted?

I only see the XL+.exe install file. Do I actually have to install the program first before I can find the XL+ patch files?

Yes, install the "XL+ editor" and you find the factory presets XL+ in folder "\Program Files\KORG\microKORG XL+\Preset Data"
But, you may just download alredy converted XL+ presets from here:

Yes, using the documentation, I quote lists PCM/DWGS samples, denoting the color differences between the XL + and XL:
"green" - no differences present
"red" - differences present
"black" - names is slightly different, but how it sounds by ear?

Keep digging difference in XL/XLplus PCM/DWGS samples ...
I found Interestig thing. As is known, the "MicroKorgXL (XL+) Sound Editor" provides a number of presets.

So, "XL Sound Editor" includes:
MK_FactoryPreset.mkxl_all
MS2K_FactoryPreset.mkxl_all
MS2KB_FactoryPreset.mkxl_all

"XL+ Sound Editor" includes:
microKORG_FactoryPreset.mkxlp_all
MS2K_FactoryPreset.mkxlp_all
MS2KB_FactoryPreset.mkxlp_all

Each of these files XL+ are identical to XL files, and using samples PCM/DWGS with different names on the XL and XLplus, but with one and the same numbers.

If PCM/DWGS samples are really different in motherboards XL and XL+, it is very strange!
In other words, if the sound of these samples varies significantly between models XL and XL+, the same programs in these files will sound completely different on models XL and XL+.
Why, then, KORG not corrected these presets for XL+, but actually just took the old files created for XL model?

Another strange thing.
The "XL+ Sound Editor" has a menu item "Import MicroKORG XL Library Data..". With its help, you can import any file from a preset model XL, but no warning that the file uses incompatible samples will be issued.
Interesting example: if program from XL uses PCM/DWGS sample called "WURLY EP", and this sample has number 3 in PCM-set of XL board, then the same sample set in the PCM-set XLPlus is number 4.
However, after the import preset with such a program, the preset number is not corrected automatically by "XL+ Sound Editor" from number 3 to 4 (in the settings of timbre will already sample called "DYNO EP").

Thus, these observations suggest that the sound of these samples differ very little between the models and the XL and XLplus, and perhaps even no differences (except names)?..
Finally put an end to these speculations can only comparison sound of XL and XL+ PCM/DWGS samples by ears. I need help owner model XLplus.

Mmh, the Korg engineers either forgot to take into account the change in the PCM samples or only spent little time in the conversion and limited themself to change only the headers in the library files...
After all, not too many people will have both boards and can compare the quality of the conversion after all...

What would finally find out exactly how much different the sound of some PCM/DWGS samples XL and XLPlus models, described above, I need help of owner model MixroKorg XLPlus.

This ZIP-archive (just about 3 kilobytes) contains a MIDI file and file-presets for XLPlus. Presets must be loaded in MikroKorg, and by playing through it midi-file (1 min 35sek.), record audio into MP3 and WMA and send me (the address and step-instructions is inside the archive).
I'll post both received the file (with the XL model I record myself), and all visitors can see how very different sound samples models XL and XLplus.
