Vocoder without pressing keys. Microkorg can, why not R3?

Post by xTsukasa »

Hello,

I'm trying to recreate what I used to do in my microkorg with the korg r3. I used to put in external inputs and then run them through a vocoder patch to get some cool effects. I can't seem to get the r3 to cooperate, when I input sounds using the two inout lines on the back (yes I have the mic button off for the vocoder mic set to back) I cannot affect the sound using the synth, how can I correctly set this up and can I run the external audio through a vocoder patch as well (as in the effects of the vocoder will occur without me holding the keys down).

Also I used the microkorg to change my voice into a female voice (I'm male). Can the r3 vocoder do this as well? and everything the microkorg can? I'm discouraged by the vocoder set up an quality already :(

I'm not sure how the MicroKorg does this, but it's normal that you have to hold down the keys for the vocoder to work. Otherwise, what synth sound and which pitches are being used?

Maybe I need to use the audio in function. I've tried using the audio in preset but I still need to hold down keys to hear the audio in. Any suggestions?

Hi,

Well it looks like that the microKORG and the R3 can both use audio input 2 straight away as carrier signal. Which may explain the possibility to have vocoder effects without using keys? Although I've no idea how it sounds when using the same signal for both the modulator and carrier...

So it should be something like:
* set audio input 1 as audio source for the modulator
* turn audio input 2 level up in the vocoder carrier page.

Best is to start from an existing vocoder patch which does already something.

What you also may try: if you need to push the keys to hear something, switch on the arpeggiator, configure the hold function and dial in a long release time for the AMP envelope. Then you should only hit the keys once to have a continuous carrier which you modulate using the mic at input 1.

Concerning male to female, I would say that R3 can do that as well. Play with formant shift up.

Have fun!
