NEW TODAY midi controller/midi channel questions

Post by markxl1 »

Hi everyone 8)
had a read of all posts but couldn't find the following out.....
only found out about korg gadget yesterday and running it on ipad2. first time i changed a gadget it crashed but tried again and so far have 3 gadgets running.... will push it to 5 later.

My question is about teying to play a groove on a groovebox and using the gadgets sounds. Is this possible? for example an emx or rs7000 groovebox playing more than one midi channel at once into the ipad/gadgets on different midi channels and then recording the midi data when happy???

In Gadget you can only receive MIDI notes to the active gadget you have focus on (one at a time). Gadget receives on all channels only (Omni) so whatever is playing on whatever channel is going to play to your active gadget.

For example, My EMX1SD has drums broadcasting on MIDI ch 10, Synth 1 on 11, Synth 2 on 12, Synth 3 on 13, etc. If I press play on the EMX with all parts unmuted it will play that chaos into my active gadget.

The solution here is to solo a single EMX instrument part, pick my corresponding gadget, and press play. To record use your free hand to control Gadgets rec/stop simultaneously. Remember Korg hasn't released MIDI clock sync yet which is a sin in my book. They are apparently aware of it and may include it in the August update (Code Name: Santa Clara). Until then your on manual for transport queuing.

If they do provide clock sync and multi-channel multi-gadget similar to Caustic (also awesome on iPad) I'm gonna have even more fun using it with my EMX.

I'm really annoyed korg released gadget for ipad2 as it's not worth the trouble at the moment....being unable to open up some of the demo's takes the piss!
just weighing up whether to sell my mc808 to buy an ipad air??

Curious which MIDI interfaces did you try?

iRig MIDI are pretty popular.

Akai EIE (Red one. Not the grey Pro version) is pretty popular amongst some on the AudioBus forums as a do it all device (audio and MIDI). http://www.akaipro.com/product/eie

I have an iConnectMIDI4+ which I think is amazing. Messing around with the routing can get complicated but honestly they work great out of the box. They make other devices depending on your application. http://iconnectivity.com/Products

Hi
Midisport and cheap USB iPod adapter....
Hope to see updates to suit a different style of working.
A good undo, more presets and randomise
would be great too.
I've had the emx a few times now if you want some new patterns...

I bought irig and works well. I can see the korg emx being very useful as you can assign a note to each drum hit and then you have 5 monosynths channels.... I may have to buy another ( for the 4th time ).
You are right, no midi sync is a pest with 16 bar loops but not a problem with 1-4 bar loops and varying tempo on your hardware sequencer until you are happy to record.
Emu command stations with superbeat ROMs work really well with Korg Gadget as you have great riffs with awesome midi timing and velocities to create a amazing drum loops in seconds. The yamaha RS7000 is also very good because of the loop remix function.

But for now with an ipad 2 I don't feel limitless and notice missing drum hits when the ipad2 is being stretched at 4 gadgets. Is it possible to transfer korg gadget in your name to a new ipad in the future??

midi sync, new gadgets (sampler), and multi midi channel use would be good but would get messy 8)
