Piano Soft Pedal emulation

Post by Pfeff »

Anyone know how to emulate the change in timbre and sound to the Concert Grand or any other piano for that matter like when you depress the Soft Pedal (una corda) on a real acoustic piano? On the Tyros 5 for example, moving the modulation wheel behaves like a soft pedal and very nicely indeed.

Is there an assignable function that can activate this?

Thanks for any help on this...

Cheers,
John

John , If you have created a sound containing soft pedal sound's OSCs then you can assign them to any controller , but you haven't !
Either T5 nor any arranger has real dumper samples , only OSC low filtering that is not the same in no way !

In other words , this assignment is feasible in any arranger but only when a sound is designed to support it , and there is no
factory piano in Pa3X that has the proper design nor damped samples are existing in factory Rom , so only a sound developer
can create such a piano with custom external dumper samples that will eliminate your small Ram capability !

Only a Kronos X can tolerate these Gb requirements to create a VSTi type high-end piano like this

While I'm sure Antony is correct about the complexity of a realistic soft pedal emulation the Korg Pa3x however does have a Soft Pedal function built in.
If you have a spare or second damper pedal you just need to plug it into the assignable Pedal jack and set it up as follows:
Go to Global, Menu, Controllers, Pedal Switch Tab, change function to Soft Pedal. I've just tried it and it works with both the factory pianos and the very, very nice Steinway Antony posted a few months back. If fact it seems to work on a progressive basis as well not just on/off. The second pedal I am using is a Roland pedal and it has a switch where you can choose "continuous" or "switch". I have it set to continuous.
I usually have my second pedal set to turn Mic Harmony On/Off so I hadn't tried this till now but I must say it does give you very nice expression.
Cheers,
John

Thank you both Antony and Reuben...

I tried the Soft Pedal Rueben and while it lowers the volume, I don't think it alters the timbre. It seems to just lower the volume. Wouldn't be a useable solution for me either as I have an expression pedal attached to the second controller input. And I need that for organ play.

I think Antony is right. I did find through trial and error that I could use the assignable sliders which by default (A sliders) have sliders 3 and 4 set to VDF Cutoff and Resonance respectively. These filters do effect the timbre and volume but it seems universal and I haven't yet found a way to return them to the default settings except by rebooting the keyboard. Need to study this harder.

Must say that the Tyros 5 does this very well indeed but I still like the Korg Pianos better and your Steinway sample are superb Rueben.

More work needed...

John

Mine definitely alters the timbre as well as the volume - at least for the more complex sounds that that have different timbre at higher velocities including Antony's Steinway.
PS - after listening a bit closer I'm not sure if I am correct about the timbre - it could be my imagination!

John
