Drum sounds peak without giving out much level

Post by crystaldrone »

Have been facing this dilemma, and get a bad gain structure over all in the mix because of compensating for the radias levels. If I adjust the level on the radias, the output i get without peaking is too low.

How do I get around this? Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Hi,

I would try a combination of the following:
* Per instrument in your drumkit, you may adjust the envelope generator for the amp (eg2) - the trick should be to reduce the attack a bit and/or increase decay time and sustain level. This will soften the peak a bit (the drum hit itself), but increases the overall level of the instrument. This allows increasing again the levels of the drum instrument in the mix without peaking.
* Insert the Limiter effect on the drumkit timbre and adjusts is parameters. This applies then at once to the overal sound/mix coming of the drumkit and flattens high peaks to some extent, giving headroom to increase the overall level (with the gain parameter of the effect)

Have fun.
