Need buying advice: Midi chain (1x MV8800 > 3x Volca)

Post by mstrnic »

Disclaimer: I only ever had 3 actual MIDI devices at once in my life and they all had in/out/thru. I also don't own any Volca yet and i just want to make a list of items that i need or should consider. I never really had a real synthesizer, let alone muiltiple.

I am struggling with the fact that there is only a MIDI IN and nothing else, while my DAW only has a single MIDI OUT. I own a Roland MV 8800 (a DAW/sequencer) from "back in the days" and thought it would be put to good use in this constellation.

QUESTION:
Without an THRU on each unit how would you control all 3 Volca's from the single MIDI OUT of my Roland MV8800 (or any single unit for that matter)? Is there something like a splitter or midi breakout box for such scenarios?

PS: i find the Roland to be too much of a monster in this setup. i am open for suggestions.

UPDATE!:
Would this device be an answer to my problem?

The Quadra Thru will indeed work. I use one myself to sequence all three Volcas from my microSTATION which only has a single MIDI OUT port. The Quadra is totally worth the money since no power adapter is required. You just need to remember to switch the MIDI channels on the Volcas to match what tracks you have set up on the sequencer.

By default, each Volca is set to the following channels:
Keys - Channel 1
Bass - Channel 1
Beats - Channel 10
Roland Juno-60, SH-101, TR-606, MC-505, Casio CZ-101, Yamaha DX100, DX11, Kawai R-50e // Korg R3, microSTATION, Monotribe, MS-20 Mini, SQ-1, minilogue, electribe sampler, Volca series: Bass, Keys, Beats, Sample, FM, Kick, Moog Theremin
