help creating synth sound in The Fall's "Behind the Cou

Post by orbitrob »

hi my name is Rob and I usually play guitar in a "The Fall" cover band here in Toronto, called "Mister Pharmacist".

We're attempting to cover the song "Behind the Counter" in which i'll be playing keys. I have just started learning/playing the microKorg and to be honest the learning curve in how to create new sounds is pretty overwhelming. I wonder if there is there anyone out there/in here who can guide me in how to emulate the sound in "Behind the Counter"

btw the song can be found on you tube. Its by "The Fall' and is called "Behind the Counter". the synth sound can be heard at 0:43 and 1:53

Any help is greatly appreciated! cheers

Hi,

I would do it like this:
* take sawtooth as waveform for the oscillators
* add some/little lowpass filtering
* add the phaser effect (because according to me that is the most important movement that you hear in the sound), play with the depth and LFO speed
* add some delay (short times) to mimic the reverb a bit

Have fun

hi OpAmp,

that was really helpful. thanks! i've written a sound to the microKorg that i'm pretty happy with. I guess that any written sounds replace the existing factory presets - that is, until you return the unit to its factory settings? I also notice that the sound i've made is a lot quieter than the factory sounds - is there any way to fix that without altering the sound?

cheers,

Rob

rob,

you can raise the volume a few ways inside the global edit menu, can't think of the exact pages as at work right now but there are options.

make sure your oscillators are up full 1st off.
are you using a single or multi patch
how is your filter and amp envelope set up

Hi Rob,

Written programs replace indeed the factory ones. You can afterwards restore back the factory patches. You can do this for one specific program or for all programs at once.

Volume, yep, as Jamie suggests:
* turn up the volume of your oscillators in the mixer page
* make sure you have a rather rectangular amplitude envelope (small attack, small decay, rather high sustain, small release)
* turn up the level in the amp page
* check the virtual patches, make sure that none of them has a negative impact on a volume related parameter. At first I would turn down the modulation intensity of each virtual patch to 0.
* if it still not loud enough you can boost further by using a virtual patch (source is amp eg, destination is amp, turn up the modulation intensity)

Bye.

Hi orbitrob,
You have only one Osc raised in the mixer page.set control 2 to 127. (-This gives you the option of exploring different settings in Osc 2 like changing octave or suble detune/ring mod. If you try this, back off mixer cont2 to lower the vol of our new osc2 sound to taist).
You could try turning on distortion in the Amp section (3rd control), but again, experiment as this will change sound (turn down 1st control in Amp to lessen disto effect).
Finally deffo experiment with your EQ section as you can make your sound cut through the live mix ,by boosting top or bottoms. Use controls 2 and 4 for low/high gain and 1&3 for adjusting tone to fit in with you bands frequencies.

hi Spheric,
i did as you suggested and definitely got more OOMPH! and volume out of the sound. EQing also really gave it some extra punch. Mark E. Smith would be proud. band rehearsal is tonight.
thank-you (and to Op and Jamie) for your help.
Rob
