Anyone else using 8+ Volcas (4 xVS, 4x VK etc)

Post by slimchance »

Hello there,

Very curious to know if any else out there uses an all volca or volca heavy live setup,

My current rig is using:

4 x Volca Keys
4x Volca Samples

but have also been considering expanding the rig to:

6x Volca Samples
6 x Volca Keys
2x Volca Bass
2x Volca beats

There's lots of neat tricks to be had with the bigger setup, that would be really cheeky and unique

Thought the 16 Volca keys video Korg put up by SETH was interesting ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqBDw_iSPuY ) , the rig looks amazing and its great to watch an artist(s) at work with it. I feel there's a killer sound to be made from 48 oscillators, but with a mix of all the Volcas in the series I reckon pretty much any sound/ genre can be made with that set up.
Would be great to tour/gig with aswell as your complete rig is light, easily replacable if anything goes wrong or is broken, all battery powered so at gigs you aren't worried about power cords, and can easily fit in a suitcase, it completely flexible musically aswell. getting a decent live misdown is possible as everything has a volume knob.

Anyone have any objections, downfalls i'm missing, personal experience or added tricks and ideas?

All i can personally see as a problem is the sample rate for the Volcas that maybe noticable on big sound systems
and also the amount of deep low frequency action. although layering the beats kicks with each other and sub samples in the samples could provide that i reckon.
Anyone also know how reliable the midi clock is when syncing up a s**t load of these things?

:) [/list]

If syncing up a lot of Volcas only, then skip midi and use the sync ports, cheaper cables and much less likely to cause problems.

I only have 2 VS, 1 each VKeys,VBass,VBeats and 12 Monotribes, although I never use them all at once (yet).

Let me add:
if you want to use "48 osc" as you wrote you might be "forced" to go the midi-path (which probably will result in a pretty messy cable-salad :) )

If it´s "only" sync I do absolutely agree with darenger but recommend to avoid too much daisy-chaining. For example a few multiples from the modular-world or some belkins would do some wonders..

Oh of course I'd use the sync in/outs, any syncing lag that when a lot of them are synced up that people know of? maybe with a few sq-1's sequencing some other synths modules via the sync in and outs for so more sound possibilities.
I have been considering going more modular but my wallet is already crying as it is haha

I have 2 VS, bass and keys. One VS is my main drum machine and the other I use for sounds and loops. Considering on adding another VB and hook it up with a delay pedal and a reverb as well. I also use a monotron delay for space spunds.

They all work fine together. You can do a lot with all of them. I would consider getting a the Berhinger BCR2000 and adding this https://zaqaudio.com which adds a really powerfull sequencer.

At the same time for all the price you are paying for the volcas you could get other gear but whatever works for you.

Try to get a used Monotribe (Midi-fied if possible) - it would at a lot of fun to your setup :)
