Overlapping favorites

Post by liz55406 »

Hi everyone,

I use a Korg Kross in my band and there are many changes in my favorite setting throughout our songs. The problem is, every time I select a new "favorite" there is an abrupt change in sounds, even if I hold down my damper. This doesn't happen on any of my Yamahas, so I was curious if there is a setting where you can hold a sound with the damper pedal while you switch favorite settings for a smoother transition.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Here's a suggestion to make up for that not being possible: what if you got a cheap delay pedal, and hit it right before making the change of favorite? Then hit it off again a second or a half second after?

There is no way with the favourites, but there is a way within a combi.

before you set up your combi, make copies of the sounds you want to switch between and put them in the program user bank in a consecutive order.

Go ahead and set up your combi using the sounds you copied in the program user bank.

Now when you perform using your combi, go into the combi and sellect the channel with the sound you want to change....as if you are editing the combi.

Now when you press the damper, the sound will sustain while you scroll to the next program, until you strike a new note.

it might seem a bit convoluted, but if you tend to use certain sounds alot, it should be ok. This of course means having the same effects on all sounds, so it wouldn't work great for example going from piano to an organ with a rotory effect. but I discovered it switching from a piano to an e. piano and it worked like a charm. This was many months ago, so I should probably go back and make sure I described this correctly, but I think it should work.

Another thing I have considered is running the Kross through an external reverb, more or less like Tommymandel suggested with a delay, but reverb is maybe more subtle and universally used on more combis. You wouldn't need to turn it on and off. It won't really sustain a note, but it should de-emphasis the stark drop off of sound when you switch favourites, for an over all smoother transition.

Overlapping Favorites: What if...?

Post by Ol Will »

Yes! I think you folks can answer this for me, please -- a question I posted a couple of days ago on another keyboard forum about Kross-61 Favorites behavior:

“Let's say I want to play Chicago's Colour My World. I set the first Favorites key to play piano left of the split and organ to the right; I then set the second Favorites key to play the same piano on the left, but with flute on the right. If I select the first Favorites key and play the continuous arpeggio with the left hand, what happens when I press the second Favorites key? Does the piano continue to play uninterrupted (like my old PSR-530), or is there a momentary break in the output (which regrettably was the way my Alesis QS6.2 worked)?”

No local music stores have a Kross-61 I can try, so I'm really hoping one of you can shed some light on this for me – thanks!

a momentary break as in any entry-level keyboard based on 15-20years old sound engine (with related hardware).

Thanks, castorex. I sort of figured that might be the case.

It's impossible to have uninterrupted patch changes with combis on the Kross. The only keyboard that can do true uninterrupted patch changes with combis is the Kronos (they call it patch remain). Lots of keyboards can do it with programs (single sounds, as opposed to groups of 16+ being played simultaneously), but it just takes too much DSP power to bring in a whole new bunch of samples and effects while the current ones continue to play.

Thanks, WindriderMetal. Since my old Yamaha PSRs played continuously (per my example) I figured that was just the way the kb world worked, and was surprised when my Alesis went dead momentarily. Appreciate the tip, but the Kronos is out of my price range. I'm going to take another look the Yamaha MX-61. I seem to recall it did what I wanted, but maybe not...

Just to follow up...
I tried out the MX-61 again, and yes, you're absolutely correct, it too is momentarily interrupted when changing from one Performance or Voice to another. It does make a smooth transition while changing octaves within the same voice (when the sustain pedal is held down). The MX op manual describes how to make smooth transitions when playing a performance, but the method suggested wouldn't meet my criteria. The Kross in still on my radar, so I may be back...
Thanks for the help,
