How can I restore M3's default sounds?
I already tried Global > "Load Preload / Demo data", but it doesn't seem to restore them.

This absolutely works. Make sure you select the "All PCG" option or whatever it's called (not in front of the M3 right now) but it restores all programs and combis. You don't need to load the demos.
One other thought: I'm not sure if it would still work otherwise, or give you an error message, but make sure you don't have the Global Memory Protect settings turned on.
