electribe 2 -sequence patterns via midi

Post by brasiele »

how to sequence the patterns on electribe 2 with an external midi sequencer like logic ? so to compose a whole song arranging patterns from the daw instead of using pads
thanks!

Each part has the same midi channel as it's part number. 1-16.

hi,
thanks for replying

I was about triggering patterns from my daw, not programming the electribe parts from it.

..basically I would like to build patterns on the electribe, and then put them in sequence from logic.

As electribe 2 has no song mode there must be a way to trigger different patterns in sequence.. apart from the pads of course.

Doesn't sending a program change to the global MIDI ch change patterns?

He said "apart from the pads". The struggle is real.

The first thing I tried when I got the unit was to see if I could use the pattern-chain function on the ESX to send program changes on the E2. No luck, unless..

Hmmm.. I don't think the unit has a global MIDI channel, does it? I guess I need to look in the manual, because this could change my workflow quite a bit.

EDIT: Indeed it does. Now off to try this again, hopefully with some success! =)

it would be great if one could arrange the song from daw,
so to keep the nice features and workflow of linear sequencers
but finally putting the word END on the piano roll for composing.

If this can be done I'm buying one electribe 2 now!
thanks for the help guys ;-)

Ah, my apologies. Having to use an external sequencer to overcome the lack of song mode is really frustrating.

DiscoDevil,
I was thinking the same and definitively it is weird that it can't make songs!!
I can't believe it...
At least they didn't put "no song" on the features list :-D

On the other hand, for STUDIO use, I would find easier to sequence a song graphically than sequencing patter1 pattern2 chorus1 intro2 ecc ecc on the electribe small display.

Not even to mention the possibility of synching long audio files to the midi like an a cappella or a guitar track for example...

I think a groovebox is better to write midi phrases in a more creative and musical workflow, but it's hard to beat a DAW for easiness of arranging parts together and make a complete song.

let's see if it's possible to make the electribe2 to work like that..

Sauce, we are in your hands!!!
how is it responding the global midi channel?

My view is that this is not a studio unit. If you want to use it with a daw you might as well just use the daw, it's probably got better synths in the daw anyway and if it's the workflow you want just use the e2 as a controller for the daw for programming.
I'll stick with using it in a live style and using my hands to change patterns.

.. sorry I forgot to add one request for the next firmware:

why don't you remove that old fashioned "pattern" thing?
it's too dated guys!!!
:-D
just kidding, please stick to the patterns for the moment please!

The electribe works great hooked up to a daw. I can record my parts (midi) into the Daw by playing them on the electribe. No more 4 bar pattern limit when using it this way.

Also, Pattern changes can be recorded into the Daw, chopped and rearranged to send back out for sequencing patterns.

Bank Changes use MSB/LSB and are sent on the auto channel.

If you are messing with this stuff do yourself a favor and hook up midi-ox or some other midi monitoring software so you can see whats going on behind the scenes.

Frenzies

thanks for your answer

here is my studio setup if I had an electribe:

DAW (master midi clock, audio tracks and just one midi track called "electribe", this sends midi data to the electribe telling it which pattern must play and when)
electribe2 (it will output the audio of just 1 or 2 VA instrument and the MIDI of all the instruments)
my hardware synths (played midi by the electribe 16 midi tracks)

everything returns with individual outs to my analog desk, so I can use external outboard of my choice.

at the moment the electribe2 role is done by an RM1X
I love this workflow cause even after hours I still feel very good, while if I was clicking with the mouse staring at the PC display all the time I would then feel sick and unable of doing good tracks!

The RM1X is very old compared to the electribe2 , so I was hoping to find a better sequencer, with more up to date features from Korg, like step jump, individual tracks lenght, ecc ecc I love what they did with Volca sequencers, so I guess electribe will have expanded this even to a couple steps forward.

by the way, where can I download a full manual?
the one I have found is multilingual kind of quick start guide..
