SQ-1 as a USB MIDI - CV converter

Post by LektroiD »

Anyone have any idea how to use this as a USB MIDI - CV converter?

2 problems exist:

1) I can't play CV devices attached to the SQ-1 from either my controller keyboard, or a DAW sequence. Nothing is output. It only outputs notes when the SQ-1 sequencer plays, not from the USB MIDI. I have tried every MIDI channel on both "SQ-1 CTRL" and "SQ-1 MIDI OUT" from logic, but to no avail.

2) I have it wired to the DAW via USB and it starts the sequence when I hit play on Logic. In order to have it as a useful USB MIDI - CV converter (once I have solved problem 1), I need to prevent the SQ-1 from starting with the DAW. A solution is to plug a jack into the sync socket, but that isn't ideal. Is this the only way?

On the Korg FAQ, none of the above issues are addressed, the sparse information basically only says it is possible, but no details on how to set it up, or why it doesn't actually work.

From the Korg FAQ:
"Using the SQ-1 as a MIDI-CV converter
When the SQ-1 receives a note message via USB MIDI, it outputs the corresponding CV and GATE, allowing you to use the SQ-1 as a MIDI-CV converter. However, if the SQ-1 itself is outputting a CV, such as while the sequencer is running, that operation takes priority, and MIDI-CV conversion is not performed."

You're on the right track there. You want to find a way to block filter MIDI clock and start stop messages to the SQ-1 from your DAW but preserve note messages.

Also known as a "Clock Block" which is not a nice thing to do to your friends :)
