newb looking for classic synth sounds

Post by Dek »

Just bought my first keyboard and I am very new to all of this. I'm a singer and guitarist but always wanted to experiment with a synth so splashed out on a new Kross 61 and just got it set up yesterday. So, my first question, is there an easy way to replicate sounds from classic synth tracks on the Kross 61? For example if I wanted to replicate the lead from Gary Numan's Cars how would I go about that?

I'm new to the Kross too. I'd suggest scrolling thru the preset sounds first- you'll probably find something pretty close. There are some really good analog sounds on there, sawtooth and square waves that sort of thing. To get it exact you'll have to tweak the settings- effects, LFO, envelopes, waveforms etc etc which can get pretty involved especially if you're new to keyboards.

But for vintage synths I'd look in the Synth Lead for anything analog or vintage, or even try the Bass section for synth bass sounds. It's a good place to start.

Don't forget to try the 4 "bonus" banks developed by Korg and available for free download, as well as the sounds made by other users, and posted in the Korg Kross Share Group in Facebook, for example the fantastic Santasaurus pack developed by Thomas Halbrecht ("Synthesaurus") exclusively for this Facebook group

if i were you i would look for old synth manuals and things with synth recipes from the 80s and 90s and remake them to the best of your abilty on the kross, you can also do things like add a tiny tiny bit of lfo to the pitch to make it sounds slightly more analogue and such.
most of the sound pack sounds sounds good in isolation but suck in a mix so if i were you i would make my own , tons of fun too
Mwahahahaha!!!

I would advise you to signup as a Patreon.com follower of Synthesaurus if you're like me who just bought his first synth ever and is staring at a mountain of learning to climb/overcome. The Synthesaurus makes some awesome tutorials and is very knowledgeable about the Kross 61 having had it for two-3 years I think. Easiest way is to sign up as his patron on www.patreon.com/synthesaurus and have access to his wisdom and knowledge (power-user/advanced user level/master ?) and you can have access to his help for $1 a month, which is what I did. But I'm a frightful cheapskate from India so :(......
