Kronos locking up/freezing/crashing

Post by musicalsam »

Hi all,

My Kronos has crashed two times in two days. I will endeavour to have it repeat the fault in the interest of preventing it happening at a critical time.

I'm now photographing the frozen screens since I've lost work both times and am becoming fractious.

The keyboard has still generated sounds, and the performance controls (ribbon, joysticks) have continued to work, post crash. All other switches and controls appear to stop responding.

Freeze 1 was on the disk save page having just saved a .SEQ.

Freeze 2 was in MIDI Event Edit. However, the sequencer was acting strangely for a minute prior: the MIDI track was playing back inconsistently, and not displaying data in Track Edit.

I will turn this into a more persuasive post if the problem persists.

Sorry to read this . As a heavy SEQ user, its a hassle to lose your work.

intermittent crashes are tricky to source.

I have had 2 crashes in 1 year with the SEQ. Both times I was using a bunch of FX. It seems that the OS did not like all the processing and it demanded a time out. On both occasions, my Kronos was getting overly warm, plus my home office was in the 80 degree range.

If there is a next time, tell us about the files you are using, whats in your SONG files, the midi files, are you importing stuff, using lot of WAV's, etc, etc.

There are several possible causes of freezing type behaviour. These are not unique to the Kronos, and this list is not exhaustive.

A malfunctioning USB device connected to the Kronos - did the freezing behaviour occur whilst any such device was connected?

Poor mains power quality. Although the Kronos' can operate over quite a wide range of mains power supply voltage, transient mains supply dropouts or surges could possibly cause Kronos' internal supplies to go outside their nominal values, resulting in malfunction. A decent UPS is a worthwhile investment, especially one that filters out surges and power supply variations.

Strong radio transmissions nearby, including those from mobile phones placed directly on the Kronos, may be sufficient to cause problems.

Corruption of the system files on the main storage drive. This can be caused by turning off the Kronos before a write operation, usually a Program, Combi, Sequence or Global save, has fully completed. One solution for this would be to reinstall the OS from the DVDs that came with the Kronos.

Intermittent malfunction of one of the circuit boards associated with the failing switches and controls.

Thanks for the responses!

I've noticed that the Track Edit screen has been intermittently unresponsive to track changes, either by tapping on the visual track display itself or by using the track change menu present on most pages. I'll investigate whether crashes occur after this lagginess.

I was using a rather odd USB stick for backing up - one by Technika with media player controls.

The power supply isn't cleaned so I will investigate obtaining a UPS.

I wondered about an OS corruption so will also investigate a reinstall.
