New Microphone

Hi all,

Ref: Pa4x and new microphone. Some time ago I posted about a microphone I purchased and said that despite all of my efforts, hours in total, I could not get rid of the "HISSING". Returned it and supplier was great.

However I am going to try again and purchase a new mic, Shure sm58 and this time a very good quality cable. But still a bit nervous. So:

Please has anyone installed a mic into PA4X latlely and what were the results, POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE.

I used the GAIN button last time but the OS 2.1 that I now have says that the adjustment is finer via the control panel. Any answers would be great from those who have installed a mic into the PA4X. I feel that I am missing out on a feature of this great bit of kit. Love the the PA4X.

I use the sennheiser e835 and it works fine, no hissing.

Hi Thanks for quick answer

Just phoned my dealer and arranged to meet him tomorrow. He very briefly explained that the built in speaker causes interference, he knows all about it and the solution and will go into it in more detail.

Bit of a long journey but will make a day out of it. Then I will report back to you.

I think that it is necessary to find a suitable microphone for vocal. Not all vocals are the same. And not all microphones are the same. It is imperative to find a complementary microphone. I worked with SM89, SM89 Beta, AKG D3700, Beyerdynamic Opus 89, and finally fingered on the Audix OM3, which is by far the best fit with my vocals. Therefore, I advise you to test as many microphones as possible and find it appropriate.

Will be watching this thread with interest. I use an SM58 and get very high frequency feedback which I think may be due to the PAas speakers being directly in front and close the mic. Is it possible that feedback could be caused by a certain frequency note played on the keyboard and picked up by the mic. Anyone else having trouble with feedback?

Hi Rob

I don't own the PaAS speakers - I play mine through an independent sound system in my studio.
We use an SM58 through the PA4X (using harmoniser etc...) and never had a problem - nice clear recordings etc...

I know the SM58 is not considered TOTL but personally, I can't fault it - I don't even use my "pop-filter" any more since buying the SM58.

I channel my vocals through 1 & 2 audio out ports.

Same for me SM58 and alway the harmoniser, pa4x and no PaAS speakers , I use two QSC 10, and play with them behind me and no feedback..and of the music and voice comes out just the left and right ,,

If you are having issues with noise (hissing etc) on your mic channel it is likely that you have not got your gain set properly and it won't be a problem with the mic, the system will work with any mic but Gain staging is very important.
Also, having the mic too close to the speaker or the level too high can cause the same problems including feedback. Depending on the room, proximity of mic to speakers and voice (you) there is a limit to how much level (volume) you can use.
At high Gain and Level settings with a mic close to the speaker you are bound to get some noise as the mic pics up noise (normally inaudible) from the system and amplifies it, this noise gets pushed out the speaker back in to the mic and is amplified again and so on in a viscious circle until you get feedback.
I recommend you do some research on how to set your gain correctly and then set your volume level to suit the environment.

Hi all and thanks for the interest shown.

Today two dealers told me to get the microphone away from the speaker, that is replace the PaAS with two other suitable speakers placed at a distance away.
Came home with no microphone as planned. So:

Rob. Very pleased that you will "watch this thread with interest", just what I wanted to hear. Your thoughts are my thoughts (at the moment). Most of us need a quality microphone, end of story.

Stilli. Thanks, good stuff but I have researched "GAIN" as my first post said. So yes to your post, it "looks like" I have to replace PaAS with other more distant speakers? There are times Stilli when we need plenty of volume? But noted all that you have said. Thanks.

JP, Expert-B, Pete, Duby2. Thanks again but with all due respect you do not mention PaAS but you do say that everything is great with external speakers. However the built in speakers cost a few hundred pounds so in hindsight I should have done what you guys did. Purchased external speakers.

That is where I am "at the moment" but nothing set in stone. More research and posts will put this to bed.

Hi everyone,

PaAS is good for practice, even singing at a low level, but past 3/4 volume, it feedbacks.

That is why I bought 2 QSC K8.2 and Sennheiser e935 microphone, sounds fantastic!

Great post and input. Yes as you say PaAS is good for general use and practice but above that, reference microphone, well that is where my problem started. Hence this topic that I started.

Well done and thanks OVA, getting there slowly. Have noted speakers and Microphone that you mentioned.

Also, if you have Compressor engaged on the vocal settings, it can cause feedback. When you are NOT singing into the mic and it is on, the compressor searches for a signal to amplify, normally when you are not close to the mic.

Which should be negated if using the Gate.
