how come no audio in to VCF?

Post by ShoNuff »

how come there is no audio in to VCF mod on the Bass and Keys? :?:
you would think that would be possible?
VCO >**> VCF > VCA

is the VCF made of discrete components ?

i'm hoping someone will come up with more mods one day...

Shonuff, I really think you should have bought some different instruments as you seem not be satisfied with what comes standard on the Volcas. It's a wonderful concept that you can mod this and mod that on them, but really in the end if you want modular synths, buy modular synth modules and be done with it. Don't buy something that you then need to put more work into to function how you want it to while also ruining any chance of having it replaced if it does die under warranty. If you enjoy playing with electronics, start getting kits. The chic of being a circuit bender/synth retrofitter is silly when you can just make a synth from a kit and modify those circuits to run how you want.
Stuff I'm using: Umm right now, well there's a Volca Drum, a Micro Freak, an ADX-1, a Pulse, a Blofeld, a UNO Drum, KeyStep/Beatstep Pro/Keystep Pro (one of each), a Circuit, a LiveTrak L-12 and this nonsense: The Brief-case as it was about a bit over a year ago (the the complete ridiculous GAS monster collection here)and here

yeh you're right about diy kits. easier to build than mod.
i didn't buy these new, and have other stuff. i definitely
don't need some big modular trip right now :)

this is just curiosity - Bass is the only one that has the
service manual available. i'd find it hard to sell at the
moment. that possibility is not excluded, but i can still
find uses. it probably will go when i can get a msMini,
though i really quite like the midi sequencer part, and
need to solder that up. top's off at he moment, so i'll
end up doing the factory mods - just wondering what
can be done with them.

there must be a point somewhere, where the osc's go
into the filter ! and that must be somewhere after
Blackout's Osc Level mod resistors. i'm not that bothered
about audio in to VCF tbh. more interested in adjusting
level of each osc but that does look a bit of a nightmare,
esp' after doing the snare mod.

tbh, my faves are the FM and Sample - both of which also
have some limitations. i could handle having a 2nd FM.

and:
i'm often impressed with finding something new with the Bass and Keys,
so i haven't quite exhausted them yet - and they don't take much space,
and are great for quick setups. i think i'll probably hold onto them now,
and eventually get the Kick too.

it's just that if i could have something like osc sync, and osc level
on the Bass, that would make a big difference. and posting something
here, who knows who will pass by with some idea or other, eh.

I appreciate your enthusiasm, even in the face of my Marvin (the paranoid android*) receptions to some of your ideas. It's admirable.
Modular is very dangerous. I am not sure if I want to reign in my modular GAS, but I could do it. The Volcas work in very nicely even without modding mainly due to their analogue synch signal.
I've found a fellow up the coast from here who's (trying) to sell eurorack versions of the Monotrons, with some mods added. Would grab one if he wasn't asking 3x what a Monotron sells for, but what I've taken from that is, the Monotrons must be dead basic and a modders dream.

*Marvin would say things like "I could tell you the odd of you surviving, but you're not going to like it".

hehe yeh i remember Marvin.
i'm going to do these outputs, and then i'll think about it,
nice neat job. at least when those are on, they can be used
for other purposes if need be. it's really way too small in
there to have much fun modding them, too nervewracking.
*however* if anything else can be found on it that isn't too
difficult or risky, and makes it a bit more sophisticated,
that would be good. it's current mini opponent is an mfb
synth lite II, that i need to use more.

something interesting: i accidentally ran Keys on my laptop
18V psu the other day, for quite a while. it's still alive ... so
these little analogs might be a bit more robust and tolerant
than we imagine.

Oh so you've opened a Monotron and had a look, cool. I've got a Monotron Delay and it rules ecept for the massive amount of noise it produces. I think they are very fragile as it didn't make all that noise when I bought it, not to mention the occasional post here about someone's Monotron not working after it's been dropped. If I didn't have an irrational fear of solder braid (it gives me a nervous twitch) I'd have a go at some modding, but meh, I'm working on getting my brother to do some soldering from me as I think he enjoys making his guitar pedals more than he does using them.

no, no monotron. did hear it was noisy though. guess that's
an answer if you want to run something through a filter.

what should i fear about solder braid?
i do get the impression it's good way to lift tracks and pads : -/
