Red Rain - Peter Gabriel - That first 'C' bass note

Post by qqquartzzz »

There's something about that bass note. I'm sure the first one is Tony double tracked. Then when Peter starts singing "Red rain is ..." it's the same with maybe some low strings and the CP-70 or 80 on it as well.
It's so distinctive. Especially on the live tracks. Where most likely it's sampled and triggered.
I've tried to program it in my Kronos61 myself but I'm falling short with the right mix of instruments.
Any suggestions?

:32 is the sound I'm looking for. Thanks Greg. I should have been more specific.

I think I hear it;

Guitar + Bass + a pad or string tone.

Plus FX.

Guitar player is doing a slash chord - some 3 or 4 note chord.
if I had more time, I would nail it down.

Try Youtube for what guitarists think on the song/part

Yeah. Definitely a layer of multiple instruments. But, again; so distinctive. I just read in the forum that Stephen Kay helped with Karma programming for a tour. I wonder if he'd have any insight on how this was created live.
I'll sit down with my Strat tonight and see what I can do.
If I come up with something, I'll share on a dropbox somewhere :)

Edit: It kinda sounds like the first hit of "Rhythm Of The Heat" underneath it all...hmmm...

You are probably correct about Gabriel on his Yamaha EP and Levin playing altogether. I don't think he's using his Chapman stick as it would sound much rougher, but he could be playing his bass with his famous "drumstick fingers", which of course creates a quite different attack. Of course, I could be wrong as well.

You're welcome. IMHO Tony is one of the very best bass/stick players and also quite innovative. 8)

To transpose this on the Kronos without samples would be indeed a nice (tough ?) challenge. I'm thinking about STR-1 with an exaggerated initial attack caused by stick hitting, lots of energy initiating the string. Not sure it would be satisfactory sounding though. :?:

They are called "funk fingers" and were invented by Tony to make a "portable" version of hitting a bass guitar string with a drum stick, whilst the bass was laid flat.

Tony is one of the best bass players on the planet. :)
