Yahoo Groups shutting down soon

the no promotion of groups
is what has my nickers in a bunch...

at one time they even did tv promotion of yahoo groups!!
at least on the national networks...

phpbb works ok... that is the software I am going to use..
and is the same as this forum that sharp has.

sure it has it's days where the updates kill the database till it is updated as well..

but all in all it works as an ok platform!!

I am surprised there is not a class action against yahoo yet!!
lots of folks had lots of time invested in the groups!!

I knew about it last year in 2018...
it was at one of the IT conventions... after dinner drinks at one of the bars I had zeroed in on a private conversation that yahoo groups would be done by 2020..

market share and no funding... then the bad code writers did not help any!!
oh well we all need to take a lesson from this!!

back up your data to local optical drives!!
then if you have to move, you have it all in house!!
nothing is more secure than optical back up!!
pull the discs every night and in to the fire vault!!
slim small easy to store!!
just tip from some one who has been there and done that!!

Hey mate, yeah it's great that Sharp does what he does. It's a little oasys in what is becoming a generic wasteland of one-size-fits-all discussion venues on the web today.
As for FB, it is partly the reason for many discussion groups disappearing, but I feel that so is the slump in interest of hardware synths and electronic instruments in general post the advent of DAW/Plugin production. With so many choices for computer-based music creation, recording and production, the old forum per product environment died. It's amazing how much computers are seen as a must have for music now. I have guitarists who look at me weird when I say I don't use computers, like they can't comprehend that a device like the R24 could do all the recording, effects and mastering, then spit-out a high quality wav file ready to be uploaded to soundclown/blandcamp or wherever.

I mean there are some instances of multi-device forums that work, such as muffwigglers, but there is too much noise generally in places that get too broad and really specific interests get overlooked. And when an interest group exists within an environment where membership is mandatory but there is no specific topic that brings every member to the platform other than "I'm a human with a computing device and I know other humans!", the noise is deafening. I've been told I should join FB to be informed of some local synth events, but I just can't do it. I'll get my news about those sorts of things from the instrument stores when I go in.

As for the idea of a musical technology only intranet, it's a nice idea that reminds me of webrings hahaha!

just like bbs or bulletin board systems back in the early 1980's!!
and even a term "dial up modem" 1900 bps was fast!!
that will be a flash from the past for some!!
heck I still tel net to turn off and on some security systems!!
pretty slick!!

most have given up with pots these days (plain old telephone system)
and copper...
in some areas like mine pots and fiber have merged..

here is the rub... from all that old tech merged our early beloved synths!!
any good tech will tell you about signal tracing with audio!!
listening to the clock or power supply!!
along came spectrum analyzers to put it to a graphic display...
most have lost the art of tracing issues with an oscilloscope and signal generator...
it is all noise and music!!

that is why a good forum is still needed!!
all of the old dogs are now learning to type and reaching out to share the years of knowledge!!

yup the wave of the future is the classic old gear!!
meeting the new gear!!

I use the r24 units!! sure beats dealing with reel to reel!!
and yes I did the sound on sound back in the day!!
and still bounce tracks!!
lots less loss these days...
amazing to be able to track 1000+ tracks in pro tools!!
and be able to mix it all down.. and keep the master files for remix later!!

we sure have come a long way in the last 40 years!!

easy to start groups...
and some are there for a few weeks or days then loose interest!!

I don't have access to that information. I only have a rough member count, but so many have been overrun by spambots that that's irrelevant anyways. The point is not whether or not the groups have lots of people, it's the information and files etc that are important.

One of the reasons I stopped checking-in on thegroups I was a member of. We still get our share of spam here, as do a few other forums, but not nearly the blight proportions that was occurring over there...

Yeah, it's ridiculous. One example: a group that hadn't been active for maybe ten years, with perhaps 100 useful messages. Spambots got in with their porn links, and suddenly there are over 9,000 messages.

I have to download all messages to avoid missing any good ones but that makes the task way way longer. I plan on "cleaning up" some of the groups before making them available.

I had closed off membership
to they style that they had to e-mail me several times as well as a phone call or two before I would let them in the group.
then I had all of the members on mod.

active were still only 10 or so out of 1000...
yea...
private e-mails are still the best!!

Could the files from the various Korg sites be stored on here.
For example I still have and use a DW800, Z1 and Trinity and I know others would appreciate M1, T series and O1W files being readily available.
