How many modulation routings?

Post by teknico »

The Wavestate modulation features are staggering. In his Musician's Friend interview Dan Phillips says:
We also implemented a new way to create modulation routings, which is really fast and hardware-oriented.
What is the maximum number of modulation routings?

Here's a fairly complete list of modulation destinations. This is per-Layer/Program. You can route multiple sources to the same destination, and modulate the intensity of one source with another.

Filter:
Cutoff, Resonance, Input Trim, Output Level, Filter Key Track Intensity, Filter LFO Intensity, Filter Env Intensity
(See above re LFO/Env/Key Track Intensity modulation)

Multi Filter adds:
Crossfade, Manual 1 LP, Manual 1 HP, Manual 1 BP, Manual 1 Dry, Manual 2 LP, Manual 2 HP, Manual 2 BP, Manual 2 Dry

Amp:
Level, Velocity Intensity, Amp Key Track Intensity, Amp LFO Intensity
(See above re LFO/Key Track Intensity modulation)

Pan:
Pan, Random Pan On/Off

Pitch:
Octave, Transpose, Tune, Slope, Portamento On/Off, Portamento Time, Pitch LFO Intensity, Pitch Env Intensity
(Technically, modulating the LFO and Env Intensities just creates a new mod routing to Tune, with the LFO or Env as the first source)

Envelopes (x3):
Attack Time, Decay Time, Sustain Level, Release Time, Attack Curve, Decay Curve, Release Curve (also Trigger Source and Threshold)

Vector Envelope:
0-1 Time, 1-2 Time, 2-3 Time, 3-Loop Time, Release Time, Time Scale, Repeats, Points 0/1/2/3/R X and Y values (10 total)

LFOs (x4):
Waveform, Frequency (or Note Length and Multiplier, separately), Shape, Offset, Fade, Start Phase, Random Start Phase On/Off, Tempo Sync On/Off

Effects (x3 per Layer, plus Performance Reverb):
Edit 1, Edit 2, Edit 3, Wet/Dry

Arpeggiator:
Sort, Latch, Key Sync, Gate, Swing, Resolution

Unison:
Number of Voices, Detune, Thickness, Stereo Spread

Lanes (x6):
Start, End, Loop Start, Loop End, Loop # of Repeats, Note-On Advance On/Off, Random Order On/Off

Timing Lane:
Speed (or Speed Ratio), Swing %, Swing Resolution

Individual Steps (up to 64 per Lane)
Timing Lane Steps:
Probability, Duration Time (or Duration Note and Note Multiply), Xfade Time (or Xfade Note and Note Multiply)
Sample Lane Steps:
Probability, Octave, Trim
Pitch Lane Steps:
Probability, Transpose, Tune
Shape Lane Steps:
Probability, Offset, Level, Start Phase
Gate Lane Steps:
Probability, Gate Length
Step Seq Lane Steps:
Probability, Value

Also - all Mod Knobs can be destinations, as well as sources. For example, you can modulate Layer 3 Mod Knob 8/SPEED from the Mod Wheel.

Thanks, I saw that. Indeed, the variety of available sources and destinations is impressive.

The number I'm missing though (and I looked at the manual too), is the maximum number of routings, that is, individual connections between a source (or two) and a destination that can be created.

I cannot believe that there is no limit at all. :-)

And I'm not the only one wondering, here's Cuckoo in his tutorial:
I'm not sure how many modulations I can add. It seems limitless. There has to be some sort of limit. Maybe.

According to Dan over at slutz:

---
There is no practical limit to the number of routings that can be created. In the current factory presets, the "most mods" prize goes to a Performance with 180 routings (which doesn't include some "built-in" mod routings, such as velocity to amp).

Amazing.

Amazing indeed, and unprecedented too. I wonder what hardware/software architecture is allowing them such an incredible feature.

It makes the absence of MPE support even harder to bear, especially since it's compounded by the absence of a complete multitimbral implementation. Four MIDI channels are not nearly enough.

Korg floors me many times over in what they allow in Wavestate.
- 10 000+ performances storage
- 180 modulation each performance and more

Never mind the marketing agents from Roli, Roger Linn over MPE.
