User_ksc files not auto loading at startup

Post by Peter1960 »

I recently started a thread following my attempts to create some HD1 programs in the Kronos, after using Sample Robot to create samples of some of my VST’s. I asked if there was a limit to the number of userbank_ksc files that could be added to the autoload list on the global settings screen, as I am intending, over time, to sample maybe several hundred VST’s, convert them to programs and have the userbank_ksc files autoload at startup, so that I will immediately have access to the programs that I have created.

I have not received a response as yet – that’s OK; maybe nobody knows if there is a limit. However, I have encountered a problem recently, which may be linked to this issue.

Since my original post I have created around 15 programs from samples produced using Sample Robot. The userbank_ksc files for these programs have been added to the autoload list and everything is working fine, with all the programs available on start up.

I then decided to create one more program today. I did the same as before – added the userbank_ksc files for the program to the autoload list and pressed the “Do auto-load now” button. However, when the autoload was complete, the following message appeared :

“Autoload error. The following KSC files refer to unavailable sampling data”. Under this message was a couple of userbank_ksc files relating to some other programs that I had previously loaded. I also noted that in the list of ksc files that are supposed to be loaded at startup, the button next to these these particular files was no longer ticked.

I then ticked the box next to them, hoping they would then be loaded if I did another autoload. However, the same message appeared after the autoload was completed. The files then became "unticked" again.

I then thought that maybe there is a limit to the number of userbank_ksc files that can be added to the autoload list, and the addition of the latest file had caused the limit to be exceeded, thereby “forcing out” two of the existing userbank_ksc files. I then decided to unload the EXS3 brass and woodwinds ksc file from the autoload list, with the intention of freeing up some memory which would then allow the “forced out” ksc files to be reloaded (the size of RAM for the EXS3 file is 306Mb). Unfortunately this did not work – the forced out ksc files could still not be loaded and I am therefore not able to use the programs that they relate to.

Could anyone explain why this problem may have occurred and how I could solve it ? Why are the previously loaded userbank_ksc files no longer loading ? If this is due to a memory issue, why has the removal of the EXS3 brass and woodwinds ksc file from the autoload list not freed up sufficient memory ?

If it helps, the memory usage settings in the global page are as follows :

EXS/User Bank - 868Mb
Sampling - 35Mb
Free – 1059 Mb

Thanks for your help

Hi Peter,

Indeed, I doubt anyone except the Kronos designers knows about the limit of KSC one can add in the auto-load list.

For the rest, your problem and the message you mention is unlikely linked to a memory problem but instead an error when you built you latest KSC file. Speaking of designers, I invite to read what Dan from Korg says in the topic below. It will likely be helpful for you as it was for me and I believe should be to anyone who wants to master the tricks and traps of the Kronos sample system. This was considered so helpful that it is now part of the manuals, but in case you never read this, it should guide you to find the cause of your problem.

I doubt that the error cause due a limit of KSC auto load slots. I think you exceeded the RAM capacity or from some fault you install the autoload samples from external USB Stick then take it off. Also maybe you add the last KSC when the RAM was empty, when start to autoload, Preload data consumes a part of the memory so your samples has not loaded anymore.
Please try to the following order: Load the factory data first. Copy all your Sampling Data to internal SSD. TAKE OFF THE USB STICK FROM THE SLOT. Add User_bank.KSC to Global autoload list one by one. This procedure help you to avoid exceeded memory. If some samples are to big will can't be added. Proceed to Do Auto Load now. Check the Programs!
Success :) !
