My audio interface has S/PDIF in/out connections, but they are coaxial connections. The Kronos also has S/PDIF in/outs, but they are optical toslink cables.
I've bought an optical/coaxial converter, but I'm not getting the expected results.
When I use the converter to run audio FROM the interface TO the Kronos it works perfectly, even when the clock settings don't make sense (i.e. when both devices are set to master or slave).
However, when I use the converter to run audio TO the interface FROM the Kronos, if I try to set the Kronos as the slave it gives me a red "CLOCK ERROR" warning at the top and no sound makes it to the interface. If I set the Kronos as the master and the interface as the slave, audio comes through, but it is absolutely full of pops/crackles/jitteriness.
Both are set to 48kHz sample rate and the converter claims to support up to 192kHz.
Does anyone have any advice/experience with this?

Sounds right to me.
You cannot set the KRONOS to slave and use only 1 cable. The KRONOS has to receive the clock signal from the interface that’s set to master.
In short, you should be using two cables in this setup.
Kind regards
Sharp.
