Pulsating LED in the R of Korg

Post by JPROBERTLA »

After picking up my K2-88 about five weeks ago I set it up in my studio and began transitioning from my K61. It faces a wall and was there since I get it. Last night was the first gig I used it. After set up, we customarily dim the stage lights until we start. Glancing back at the stage I noticed a white light in the R of KORG on the back of the Kronos. It pulsates slowly. I never noticed this before. Is this something new on the K2 or was it also on the original K?

That's new on the K2.

There's a similar thing on the King Korg & on that you can change the colour of the LED or switch it off completely: I suspect in the global settings of the K2 you may find similar options.

Correct:

Global button, Basic/Basic tab, hit the menu in the top right, and you'll see "Rear Panel Illumination Setup" and it's an "off/on" option. No color options but at least you can turn it off it you wanted to.

I started having problems with my Kronos2-61 after 3-4 years of trouble-free operation: Frequent "A problem has been detected that may have been caused by cycling power too quickly" screen popping up... like within an hour of powering up. I figured my power supply was starting to get flaky. I just opened it up to check the usual stuff... loose DIMMs or connectors etc. But I found this little (~1 square inch) circuit board connected with 3 thin blue wires hanging loose inside, right by the motherboard. I was trying to figure out what it is. It looked like it had been glued to something, and had come loose. But what? Where? The part number on the little board KLM-3367B. Googled it, and it turns out to be the rear LED board that had come loose from the cut-out in the back panel letter R. Now I suspect it was intermittently shorting against the heatsink or some motherboard traces. I put it back in place and stuck it with a bit of duct tape. We shall see if my Kronos stops flaking out now. Hopefully it didn't cause any permanent damage... If that is indeed what was happening. I have already ordered a replacement power supply. Not sure if Full Compass will let me return that without a hefty re-stocking fee. I'll probably just put it in my spare parts cabinet for a rainy day.

Yes, the glue isn’t great. Had the same on my last 73…

Does it pulse randomly, or is it related to some processing?

The rear panel Korg logo LED just uses a simple independent circuit which slowly blinks. You can also turn it off in Global mode.

And when it falls off the back panel and flops around inside the chassis, it can cause a short circuit that may damage other components, resulting in an expensive repair bill. It’s a gimmick that wasn’t well thought-out. If it falls off again I’ll just remove it.
