unable to send or recieve midi in DAW

Short Version is that i am using both studio one 6 and ableton live 11.

in studio one i can see the midi ports and set up the instrument and keyboard in external devises. but when i play the XD i dont recieve midi messages and if i play my controller keyboard the xd does not respond. I have set this up already with a mininova and a yamaha motif ES8.

in Ableton the XD shows up as a midi device on the preferences page but i canot select it from the track section.

midi settings in the XD are USB but i have tried this with Midi as well.

any suggestions would be appreciated
