Weird CPU usage issue with >1 instance of Wavestate Nativ

Post by DavidLowndes »

I'm evaluating using Wavestate native V1.3.8 with Reaper V7.22 on Windows 10 22H2 and am experiencing a problem where an instance of the Wavestate starts to have a high CPU usage when there's more than one instance in use and the output audio is horribly distorted.

It's a bit difficult to describe in words, but I've recorded a short video that demonstrates the issue: https://youtu.be/RatNpNjoFww

Thinking this might be a Reaper problem, I've tried to reproduce the scenario with other soft synth plugins (Synth1 and Surge XT), but neither have shown the problem.

Although the video shows the problem with 2 instances of the Wavestate native, I've managed to record a short sample with 5 instances of it, and it plays back fine, so normally CPU usage isn't a problem.

I wonder if anyone else has encountered this issue, or if anyone using Reaper and Wavestate native would see if they can reproduce what I experience.

I've seen similar in my live setup, which uses Cantabile as the live host.

It is usually OK so long as I do not go back and reselect a song (like when I am practising). When it happens if I go into the plugin in, forward to the next patch and come back to the selected patch, it stops.

I really need to try and capture it some time and report to Korg.

Derek, thanks for confirming I'm not alone with this problem and that it doesn't seem to be specific to use in Reaper.
What's the best way of reporting this to Korg to hopefully get it fixed?

A bit more information...

I tried to reproduce this on my son-in-law's system using Cubase 13 and a newer, considerably more powerful PC than I have, and was unable to reproduce the problem there.

I then installed the trial Cubase Elements 13.0.41 on my system (an i5-4460) and could reproduce the problem. With Cubase the problem manifested either in no audible output or on one occasion a similar distorted output that I showed in the video with Reaper. Again as with Reaper, as soon as the first track started playing recorded MIDI data, the problem disappeared.

As was the case with Reaper, I was unable to reproduce the issue with other soft-synths (tested with Surge XT) in Cubase.

I can only conclude that this issue isn't DAW/VST host specific, but may only show up with multiple instances of the Wavestate native in other specific environments.

As we head into autumn and I start becoming more active in music, I will need to see if I can reproduce it.

If you see it happening again, trying moving the patch on to the next patch within the Wavestate and back again to see if that clears it.

I have tried to report the issue to Korg via https://support.korguser.net. I received 1 reply that wasn't addressing the specific situation, but nothing following my subsequent analysis which I'll summarise here:

I've since also tried the following Korg soft-synths:
  • Prophecy
    Opsix native
    Modwave native
The issue hasn't occurred with the Prophecy, but does with the Opsix and Modwave. The Opsix native & Wavestate native seem to be the most prone to showing the issue, and the Modwave native less so. i.e. it appears to me to be an issue that may be common to the newer soft-synths.

I've also tried using the motherboard's built-in audio device rather than the external FireWire Presonus FP-10, and both exhibit the issue.

I also suspect the issue may be present on all systems, but only apparent for lesser powered PCs (having tried to reproduce the issue on a much more powerful system and failing to do so). Mine is a (now lowly) i5-4460 on a Gigabyte H81M-DS2V motherboard.

I have Cantabile songs with Wavestate and Modwave both in, so when I get five minutes I will see if I can reproduce it, and thanks for the support link
