ASIO4ALL Version 2.0 Released - Significantly Improved

Finally got around to trying out 2.6. It's a LOT better. It managed to cut my already reduced latency in half. So, whereas I was running around 640 samples, now I can get by with around 300.

The first version was pretty good. But this guy just keeps making it better and better. I'm curious to see if he'll figure out some way of reducing it even further (I'm not betting on it - there's got to be a point where it's just as good as it can get).

i was surprised that the sound quality also seemed to improve.

did you notice an improvement in audio quality?

I only played with the new driver for a little while, so I didn't notice an improvement in sound - without playing something with 2.5 and then immediately with 2.6 (back to back) it is too difficult for me to compare them. And I uninstalled 2.5 prior to installing 2.6. However, I wouldn't be surprised if there was an increase in sound quality as well. Each new version of this driver amazes me.

can someone explain to me what ASIO is? I understand its drivers for soundcards, but why would one need other drivers than the ones that came with the card?

Sounds like it is useful, but i dont know anything about it. Can someone enlighten me?

The drivers that came with my card suck. The best latency I can get is around 45 ms with those drivers, and that's pushing it.

Contrast that with the 6 ms latency I get with ASIO4ALL. The difference between 45 ms and 6 ms is a really big deal!

Yammy... ASIO lets you play/record audio on your compuer in realtime... i.e. there is no noticeable lag from the time you trigger the midi/auido event till when you actually hear it from your monitors...

Else, as Riot has mentioned there is a noticeable lag... 45ms... I would find it quite tough to work with that kind of timelag...

It is very useful for playing softsynths as well as for recording audio parts...

Just to follow this up (Prash is spot on with his definition of latency which ASIO drivers (for windows, there is an equivelent for mac ?????) help to alleviate)....

Not sure if you all know about this but you can use google to find definitions of things for you. Type Define and <Word> and let google do the rest. Sometimes its very good (other times so, so...)

I've just had a small problem with Sonar and my MOTU sound card and have been talking with guys on the Cakewalk forum about solutions. The subject of ASIO drivers came up because I was using ASIO4ALL after seeing the recommendation here. I got this reply to one discussion on ASIO4ALL

" ASIO is one of the good things that came out of Steinberg- it's there because some software packages require it (Nuendo, eg). Before the existence of the WDM/KS (Kernel Streaming windows drivers, which are supposed to be very fast), the native windows drivers barely worked. ASIO was implemented on windows to give audio hardware a 'more direct' line of sight to the audio hardware. The KS drivers are much much better than the old windows MME drivers are, but I personally find the ASIO drivers more stable, at least for MOTU gear.

ASIO4ALL basically "wraps" an ASIO layer around very well coded calls to the existing WDM driver, so even with ASIO4ALL, you're still actually using the WDM driver.

Switching to the MOTU ASIO driver should yield some latency and performance improvements."

It's probably safe to say that if you have ASIO drivers for your equipment already, ASIO4ALL probably doesn't add anything. It's really for those of us with equipment that doesn't have ASIO drivers available where it really shines. It's possible that if ASIO drivers were released for the Soundblaster Extigy (for example) by the manufacturer that they would be better than ASIO4ALL. But they haven't and the only drivers available are sloooooooow. ASIO4ALL is a godsend in that regard.

But if you have a MOTU and you have MOTU ASIO drivers, I would definitely choose them over the ASIO4ALL driver, as they are likely to take advantage of the equipment in ways that a more generic driver like ASIO4ALL probably cannot.

Hello I'm retarded...

I have an 002 rack, and I am trying to use it as a sound card instead of the sound card on the motherbooard....

I want to use it with Cakewalk Pro Audio 9.0 but my sound control panel only sees it as a playback device? it sees it as an output but not an input. Can the Asio4all help me in this regard? I have already Downloaded the current drivers on the Digi website but it doesn't fix the problem.

ASIO for the WIN it should be simple to use. Just disable wavetable synth and use this as default sound driver
