Earlier this year there was a report of a similar rumor, also originating from GC, that there would be a new workstation from KORG in Summer.
For what it's worth, I have not seen any price drops here in Europe for the KRONOS, something which usually happens just before a new model is about to appear.
Just look at Yamaha's Tyros: it is about to be replaced with a new model, and those stores which still have a Tyros in stock are offering considerable discounts.

So, IF a new model is about to replace the current KRONOS 2015 I think it will very likely be the KRONOS 2017 with some new hardware components.
This would be different if there were some form of competition, but the fact is that the KRONOS has no competition, there is no other hardware workstation in this price range.
Yamaha copped out, Roland, -although being a bit of a wild card and hard to predict-, also has no presence in the price range.
So there is very little incentive for KORG to venture beyond the consolidation point especially since the KRONOS still sells well.

The rep could've been mixed up. It could just be that Guitar Center is discontinuing them (As in not carrying them anymore), and a higher-up told the rep they were being discontinued without specifying who was doing the discontinuing.
