I wonder how do they do that than if you can't remove vocals.
Hi Pa2x,

The recording studios have multi-track unmixed copies of all the individual instruments and vocals from every record that has ever been released. So they can easily produce two different "mixed down" versions of every song - one with vocals and another without vocals. There are some Karaoke DVD's produced by studios which have both versions of a song - with and without vocals.

I believe that the MP3 files in your collection never had vocals added.

Best regards,
Rob

Rob: I don't think that at this time they are aiming at that type of purpose for their software . this technology works based on melodic concepts . So if you ahve a singer and or a solo instrument within the stereo recording , at least in theory , you will be able to mute the melodic line . Now ...we will have to wait asnd see if it is possible. You could for instances remove the main melodic vocal line from a beatle tune , and then shift the pitch so it will stay in your vocal range (provided that you're not Paul MCartney...most folks aren't!) so you would have a ton of mp3 karaoke styles or wav files for that matter with the quality of the original recordings , and play/sing on top of it.
There are many commercial .mp3 that come with vocals and everything, but the few ones that I've gathered , come from Karaoke. any of those are just audio renditions of midi files , some with vocals on it . I would like to get a hold on a couple of them to see what kind of quality those have. But that wouldn't be Karaokes...but backgound tracks for singers and the like. At least that how I see it ...maybe that's not the whole story!
Best regards

Never heard of this program before. It's a really cool software. I watched most of the demos that they have , but from what i understood, direct note acess works best with a polyphonic content of the same timbre. It's seperating the notes of a guitar chord or piano chord. But if you had a drum in the background, with pads, organs ..and vocals, then what?

i've been using Melodyne pretty much since it came out, but i haven't upgraded it to the latest vesion lately. I just checked it out on their site. Looks like the new version has some cool stuff to offer. I saw a demo clip of it that shows how a guitar chord can be broken into seperate notes, which is amazing. I'll go back and read more about it later on, but at the moment I still don't think if it can remove vocals from a polyphonic track.

to Assyrianpianist: We will have to wait and see. Of course all of these considerations will fall into the speculative realm , but for now ...Melodyne with DNA will work for polyphonic notes comprising a stereo recording . My understanding is that it is based on an algorhythm that will smartly be able to recognize pitches and several of them. Based upon that basic concept , maybe , we would be able to mute a melodic line . Of course ...I don't really know for sure . Now..I have been a heavy Melodyne user for more than a year and to my humble pair of ears..the pitch shifting of a WHOLE stereo recording is way better than anything I've tried before ( I have also some experience with Antares software). Quality is top notch with Melodyne ( BTW I'm not related in any circumstances with any of these pieces of software ... I am an eye surgeon... to make a living) We will have to wait for a real professional opinion in this forum . But for now....kudos to the ingenuity that will allow such a leap in audio!
