Yes, everything was fine with 10.5.6.
The problem definitely correlates with the 10.5.7 OS X Update.
And yes, the problem is most likely not at all or at least not only a fault of KORG, because there are reports of problems with other USB hardware/drivers (usually external harddrives) in the apple forums.
The network 'improvement' and the problem it caused with euphonix hardware were already mentioned here.
I will now try to install the full update of 10.5.7 manually. Due to some reports that sometimes fixes problems from the automatic updates.
Otherwise I am considering to downgrade to 10.5.6 again. But that seems to be no easy task, even with time machine, because there were some days beetwen the OS X update and when I discovered the problem.

The manual installation of the OS X 10.5.7 combo update did not resolve the problem.
I also repaired permissions before and after the Update and checked the disks.
The current state is that the M3 now shows up again in the MIDI setup and is also declared as active.
The M3 Editor shows the orange M3-Logo (meaning FW and USB is active), but at startup displays the message that it can not find the M3 device.
After rescan, it falls back to the still working (but unusable slow) firewire MIDI.
The USB midi driver shows up in the Editors Global configuration page, but even if selected and saved as default, it will not be used.
The driver problem is also noticeable after booting up the Mac.
As long as the M3 is turned off, everything is normal.
As soon as it is turned on, it seems that the USB initialization takes much longer: Keyboard and mouse do not work at all for a while, the NI KORE controller flashes up several times (as if the USB activation happens more than once then) and sometimes even stays inactive, which does also not happen when the M3 is turned off.
By the way:
Does anyone know how to abort data transmission on the M3 or reset the device, when FW MIDI is used, without turning it off and on again?
Since I usually transfer some banks from the M3 to the Editor, I had to stop the receiving in the editor, because I did not want to wait that much time.
The M3 then still says it is transmitting data (and presumably for ever since no receiver is available).
I disabled the automatic Bank download now, to reduce the Editor startup time when FW MIDI is used but a method to abort transmission and/or reset the M3 without rebooting it would also be helpful, I think.

AFAIK, not possible.
Thought: if you're doing an exclusive dump, it's waiting for an F7 (hex) to indicate the end of the message. If you programmed something to send an F7 to the M3, it would think the message was ended, then it would stop waiting, it would display some error that the message length was incorrect. An idea...

BTW: Older Korg drivers don't work either. Just tried 1.0.7. This seems to be deep inside OS X somewhere...
Bets regards,

Furthermore, a search at Apple Discussions reveals hundreds of posts about USB devices (in general) not working correctly after updating to 10.5.7:
http://discussions.apple.com/search.jsp ... 10.5.7+USB
... and this is separate from a whole slew of other complaints about 10.5.7. Apple apparently did not get it right with this one. I do not advise updating to 10.5.7.
I also heard from some of the Korg Voicing Guys that they had same issues and have had to try and figure out a way to downgrade to 10.5.6. Don't upgrade. Stay at 10.5.6.

Maybe Apple hired the Windows Vista development team to work on OS 10.5.7 ?

thanks Steve

Appears the same here. Updated to 10.5.7 and no USB connection to the M3 editor. Shows up in the hardware profile as connected though.

I just spent a frustrating hour of searching for the problem and after that I thought about korgforums.com. I wish that was the first thing I did
I confirm!

Hey Christian and Lone,
Miserably, I can confirm that problem too.
At first i thought it was the M3 hardware as i'd just flown it in a flight case across continents, and my heart sank when i powered it up for the first time overseas and my Logic sequences did not play.
I'm going live in concert in a week's time and I've temporarily reverted back to using the standard MIDI IN connection to replace the SOUND output, which works fine for my purposes.
Just wanted to post a reply to say thanks for the web presence - i'm feeling much better about things now. Misery loves company!
Cheers,
Varian

From what I understand, Korg may be working on a fix. So, just be patient.

Hello
I have this problem too since upgrade to 10.5.7... If I see this thread first, it will stop me from Upgrade my Mac. So I suggest put this thread to sticky until Korg solve the problem.
Thanks
Sonny

Hello!
I'm from Brazil. I did the update before reading this post. I have a M3 88, Ibook, external sound card Edirol UA-25EX, NanoKey, standard software GarageBand and Korg editor. I don´t know why but, fortunately everything is working...
I warned the staff of the Korg Brazil (Pride Music) on this issue and brazilian forum (they were not aware yet).
Best Regards
