I think you are on the right track (in my case) Rich, since I can see the program tracks jumping all over once I hit the start/stop button.
I guess I'll have to edit the midis and remove all program change messages I can find.

What I don't get is the fact that a simple soundcard on a laptop can play SMF's without problems / tweakings, etc.
I've tried checking / unchecking everything on Global / Midi but, as Martin said, something that should be simple turns out to be complicated / a lot of work. (ie, Edit every single track on the file to remove Midi messages)
