well, just to give some ideas to microkorgy...
i have a daw that is where usually rec my tracks for "home" project and have through the years add some synth to my rig: M3 as main home keyboard, m50 for live and rehearsal, Virus TI2 for having a real VA and last "gas", a little real analog buy used from another forum.
and i have to say that for building up demos of song for my band of writing down ideas for groove or solo, i mainly use only the m3/m50 doing everything in the internal sequencer and use the daw when need to do some more serious things. to me, having almost everything i need to finish a song quickly inside a single synth is a great advantage.
anyway for some sounds i go with Virus and for analog weirdness with mfb. imo Virus (or any VA) is simpler for sound programming and editing than workstation in general, but there features i use that only workstation has.
another example, i tried for some months two grooveboxes: MC505 and yamaha an200 and i realized that they were not instrument for me, simply i am not at ease using those kind of synth being a keyboard player, but many that are not keyboard player makes great thinks with grooveboxes
also i know lot of people that hate workstation and do everything using pc and VST
so... it 's difficult to say what it is better for you
How good is the m50

microkorgy,
just a thought, if you are looking at the TR909, have you also checked out MC505 or MC909 which are similar but add some synthesis capability?
Also, which DAW do you use? Does it have a pattern based module already? For instance I use Reason3 and it has a TR909/Electribe type module called Redrum. Don't know if that would be of any interest to you?
