Alright, might as well jump in.

The value of having studio monitors is how your sounds translate. Every keyboard in my experience has huge jumps in sound volume (the M3 is incredible that way- from one patch to another can be just crazy) and many times the bass is overloaded. Having actual monitors, so you have some reasonable expectation of sonic accuracy, is a big plus, so that when you have your established sounds you like, you can adjust them so that, even at full volume, you don't get nasty surprises when you go from one sound to the next.

In the under $500 range:
I've been hearing great things, lots of rave reviews, about the KRK Rokits, and for $400, you can have their 6" model. Another one to consider is JBL's 2325P, 5" model, same price, also great reviews.

You have to consider your room and where you're setup in the room. I bought some 8" monitors, and for the room it was a boomy mess. I would have needed to do sound treatment to deal with those speakers. Sometimes the 5-6" models can actually be just fantastic: smaller, easier to setup/find a place for, cheaper, and as long as you set it up within 3 feet of your head, they can deliver a very satisfying experience- depends on how much bass you need for satisfaction! Otherwise the KRK Rokit 8"s are only $500 a pair.

PS Please look at my thread: "Combi: not all sounds respond to Expression Pedal". I continue working on this, haven't figured it out yet. The last post I made in that thread makes it simple to follow.
