You seriously do not want to know how much the Boeing 787 screens (10 of them) are... 
Perhaps you could try fabricating a card shade that sticks down with velcro or something?
Or a Furuno Fishfinder with TFT screen you can read in direct sunlight.

I thought kronos came with one of these:
Never played outside myself, so never had this problem fortunately but having the kronos in the correct angle or having some kind of a simple sunscreen would be what I should have tried.

I only did about 5 (out of 100 or so) gigs outside ... one time when I had a old synth (kawai K4) I was afraid the sun was melting it.

As an idea for future equipment frequently used outdoors (not just synths), there could be a secondary, smaller screen. Not necessarily a touch screen, but made of e-book "e-ink". In fact, the brighter the sun is, the better e-ink looks!
Even just a regular 80's synth-style 2 x 16 character LCD (the DX7 never had this issue
)
On a synth, this secondary screen could display simple information such as performance-critical parameters (I guess it helps to know what sound you've just selected!)
I remember one of my first Blackberry's had a colour LCD which also looked better with brighter light. It's a shame that technology has been dropped in favour of "impossible to see in sunlight" TFT's...
I'll er, get out of my designer's armchair now

Interesting idea but I doubt people would pay like $100 for it. A cheaper solution should be something like a bluetooth or USB connection to display on a 3th party device (e.g. smartphone).
